when my brother used to be a mechanic i was told the flush em with diesal, but it sure would be messy
i spose you could always get yourself a new sump gasket, take the sump off and give it a nice clean up

This is what i did to my stato when i brought it.

Drained oil and took off filter. Leaving both off
TOok off rover covers and cleaned them out with high pressure steam cleaners.
Got a strong thick bristle brush and carby cleaner and cleaned out this old oil build up and i then poured diesel oil down there to flush out all the stuff. I then put rocker covers back on. put filter on and sump plugs put a few litres of diesel in the engine and cranked it over for quiet a while. Then let it drain from sump plug over night. Put a few litres of oil in and run it for a while . Drained oil changed filter and put in new oil. Now gona change the oil again in another 3000km. Worked well for me is nice and clean now
