Blue D is for everyday, then shift down to white D for overtaking (VN) not sure if its the same for VP

Unless you are Hozy and drive in second gear down the freeway so when you back off you get flames out the exhaust and like getting 30L/100ks

    Ok I'll edit this
BLUE D lets the gearbox shift into 4th gear
WHITE D only lets it go up to 3rd gear

So unless you don't want to go into 4th you just leave it on blue D all the time, sometimes on the V6 it's good to leave it in WHITE D if you are driving up mountains or something like that where you need a bit more torque and to stop the engine shifting up and down gears all the time

I've been told that its not good to drive in [D] all the time. What I was told was:

    White D: 70kms/ph or under..

    and

Blue [D] for approximately 80kms/ph and over.

I used to always drive in [D] no matter my speed, but after being told this I soon resorted to what I was told, just because I didn't particually want to find out if or what happens....

Is it potentially damaging to drive in [D] all the time?

this has been covered many times. i leave it in white D unless i go over 85/90 for an extended period of time. it stops the auto from constantly switching between 3rd and 4th gear. blue D is good for highway driving. i feel like i have no power when driving around in 4th gear

i think they took put the D 3 2 1 into the VR because the electronic gearbox was able to work this out easier than the VN-VP.

dont be scared of using overdrive in an auto its all good with a torque converter. in 5th in a manual it creates a lot of load on the engine so its only good for cruising under 3000rpm, if you want to overtake in a manual its best to drop to 3rd as it has the most torque in 3rd and you can get up to 150kph. its pretty nifty on the freeway.

agreed on mate but i use white d 60kph and under.when my box 1st started to go i got it checked and the mech said this constant switching was overdrive cutting in and out from the locked gear.you can notice 5 gears when you drive. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, overdrive and the lock thingy (i forget the name of it) i think it all comes down to preference and wat driving style you want to feel.

did you give it the old fuel/gas flick? i used mothballs in my tank. i couldnt really say if it went faster or not, it did eat more fuel though.
