    Lightbulb The 3800...

Just wondering what your thoughts are on the 3800 block in the VN. Is it generally a good motor and reliable? I keep mine serviced (every 5 thousand k's) but i'm so f**king paranoid something will go wrong (seems to be my nature lol)!! What price are they reco'd or used? How many k's are they ussually good for. I have a VN wagon and love the thing to death haha, can't wait till i'm off the P's so i can rebuild it completely and supercharge it! I've had so many bloody mates brag about the bulletproof RB30 and I'm wondering if theres any ammunition i can spit back at the 'holier than though' bastards...
Any info and comments would be greatly appreciated...

P.S I'm up for a group but in the Dash Dials so let me know...

Both the RB30's and the Buick 3800 are both capable of well over 400,000km's some people have got over 500,000 with the original buick motor

Mate, in my humble opinion the only thing tougher than the buick V6 is the ford pushrod straight six (the OHC one aint too bad for reliability either but can be temperamental). How many trashed old VN's do ya see driving round the traps falling apart around the motor? You just can't stop the damned things. If you drive like most of us P-plater I'd be more worried about lunching a transmission if it's an auto. As for paranoia, it's a good thing, but inevitably the one thing you forget to inspect regularly will die at the worst possible time. It's an old car thing, bloody nasty minded creatures that they are. Cost of a running motor from a wrecker shouldn't be more than a few hundred (going off what people have paid for ford sixes), hopefully it wont be an issue though.

190k's your gonna do a tranny sooner than burn out the engine... that's actually very low for a vn.

just keep the cooling system in good nick.... if you overheat the Buic V6 you can cook the head gaskets then thats nasty stuff..... engine exhaust blows into the cooling system and boils the water in a few minutes....

Yep and also the later the VN the better as it runs smoother & cooler and less vibrations cause less problems at high RPM.
They are cheap swapovers, most wreckers will do a swapover for 800 or so with a second hand one.

I wouldn't get too worried about it - it has a rev limiter

My experience with all the early versions of computer controlled cars is that
the wiring and electronics, starts to give problems after 12 years or so,
bad connections , dry joints etc.
I know a few people with VN VP VR and most of the probs are electrical.

I will bet there will be loads of problems in the future for the current hybrid cars that run off battery and engine when these start getting on the 2nd hand market in 10 years or so time.

I reckon any problems we might be having with our VN's etc will be nothing compared to fixing these hybrid cars.

    I agree, Frd.

They don't build anything to last anymore anyway, I'd be surprised if many modern cars can outlive a good car built 17 years ago.
