Default HELP!!, Has anyone removed a windscreen?

I have a VN wreck with a good windscreen and I want to remove it and install it to my VP. I was quoted $168 to do this or $270 for a new screen. I know if the VN screen breaks then I have wasted my dollars so if I can, I want to remove the screen my self to save dollars.

How hard is it to remove a windscreen from a VN?

I am looking for helpful hints for removing it.

Also helpful hints to install it back in again.

hey dude it is a mission to do, i tried to do mine but end up cracking my windscreen. You can ring places in the yellow pages that do second hand windscreens fitted with new seal and warrantied against leaks for around $250. If you take yours out you have to seal it and put a new windscreen mould in about ($75 for you to do).

im not exactly sure what the wire is called ..... but its sorta like ahhh very dull serrated wire that ya poke thru a small hole made and wrap a screw driver around each end with you on the inside and a bloke on the outside and push pull effect cut the rubber . i helped the window bloke do all the windows on our cats at work n thats how we got em out. ill try find what the wires called. was bloody easy too., thats the best way i can think to do it

Yeh but thats Melbourne, I live in a rip off state (let me rephraise that "The Smart State") North QLD. $270 was from NOVA (you know that pretty yellow Van)

Knowing the name of the wire will be helpful.

shop around boss ....way to expensive,QLD..rip off state??,your the cheapest state arond , here in hobart a windscreen $220 fitted, unless your in the glass trade, sure you'd get at @ $ 150+ bills...althoughthe cost does rise if you get them to come to you, free if your in metropolitan type areas here, but if you have to get them to come out past their metro area they charge travelling.

it's just a wire rope..like you said serrated edges, they pierce the seal, push wire through run it along the top, down the sides, keeping even pressure on the second go whilst pushing top out..then they use like a big kitchen knife (sharp as buggery ...)to cut the seal on top of dash,as the seal is breaking you push on screen from inside, till she be a loose and out she is...15 minutes and it's out

ok i just took a rear windscreen out ( its for sale).. i smashed the front one cause i was trying to use diffrent ways. What you do is get a bottle of soapy water, and spray it all over the sikerflex, then using a snap blade or flexible knife ie fish filting knife cut the rubber from the inside the car. I was told this by a professional. I managed to crack the front one by using a steak knife so dont do that lol. Then i hit the other side with a hammer to see how much force it took to brake. I couldnt brake it
    lol

Just be really carefull and take your time.

Let me start off with...... It will not stop raining and I`m all wet and the wreak is in the rain with no diff nor front wheels.

I tried wire, that broke. (I`m excited)
I tried cable wire (throttle cable), that was bloody useless.
I tried a long thin kitchen knife, that was ok until it got blunt (wife aint gunna like that).
I tried a snap blade, that was great, I was cruising, it was cutting it like if I was cutting into butter.

Now for a slight problem (NO, I did not break the window), the snap blade is not long enough to slide behind the dash to reach the lower seal, OH BUGGAR!!

Is it possible to buy a longer snap blade?

Hairy Eater, My son wont let me use his guitar strings.
I found a long thin fishing knife I will try it in the morning.

They must make the windscreens in Melbourne then freight them to North QLD and charge $150 in freight.

Like I said before I got quoted by NOVA $270 for a new screen + fitting

ok I got the window out, useing a sharp long thin knife and soapy water, lotz of soapy water. That was a great tip.

Now I phoned the only two windscreen places here in town and got prices to pull the old cracked screen out and replace this window I have spent a few hours removing.

First place: $140 which can be done in 6 days
Second place: $138 can be done on Tuesday.

I would remove the old screen myself but I have no shed to put the car in if it rains.

    Thats life.
