    Default VN 5.0L exhaust advise

    Hi guys,

I am about to upgrade the exhaust on my calais, at present it is the stock 2.25 inch with the sock centre reverse flow muffler and the rear muffler removed....

The sound is good, but i would like a deeper slightly louder rumble....

I have been to 2 shops.... the first suggested just chopping the centre muffler out and replacing with a sports straight through muffler, total cost about $180.

The second suggested a full cats back mandrel system, with a 2.5 inch pipe size, new centre sports muffler, and a sports baffle at the end.... total price $360....

Will the open system sound to clacky???
i put a twin 3 inch system on my xr8 and it sounded too clacky, so i went back to a twin 2.5 inch system and it was gold....

What performance difference do you think the mandrel system would offer oer my stock system????

    Thanks guys....

i just went and put a full twin 2.5in zorst on my VP clubby, sounds awsome and loud, maybe over kill for my car but is better on fuel and i swear it has atleast 20+hp more(stock exhaust was all crushed) it's all press bent incl. the lukey extractors. has twin cats and 2 mufflers, pretty damn loud tho.

I had a twin cat system made up for my calais. I have a twin cat 2.5" into 3" just before the rear muffler. I have no intermediate muffler. There was a resonator in it but it droned too much so I got it cut out and now its sweet.

I have the HM headers that HSV fitted so I didn't bother going for pacemakers or mandrel bent. I couldn't justify the price on a 180kW motor. Its not like you are going to notice much difference anyway.

    Total cost = $530

Mandrel bends are generally not worth it unless you intend to SERIOUSLY modify your car. This from a prestige workshop south of Perth.

Thats what I got told as well. I think mandrel bending is probably overrated on most cars, and you wouldn't notice it unless its a high performance car. Not wanting to start a fight...

the only bend i would get in mandrel is the one over the diff or anything over a 35 degree bend as thats when it starts to become a restriction, on standard car that retriction wouldn't matter.
lucky for me i have IRS so no series bends, i just went for a press bent zorst

My Calais has IRS and i think the zorst runs under the diff, not between the diff and floorpan.

press bends r fine. I just got the mandrel system 4 350 brand new so I'm not gunna complain, just stating what I've got as a suggestion. With future mods, it may b handy.(Def better than the standard system with the choke point 2 into 1 at the diff cradle....)

Dave, twin cats is the way to go with a crossover or merge pipe at the same distance from the collector to the exhaust valve ) but from the collector to the crossover and then into two mufflers, then you can either go back into one 3 inch or keep two 2.25s/2.5's all the way out
