Have a look at your tyre placard. The 50mm is from the standard diameter which will be the smallest on the placard.
You can go 2 inches above stock size. So if you're tyre placard states you had 15 inch rims stock, you can legally go for 17's. Theres alot of wheel stores that will actually change you're tyre placard for you, replace it with a placard that says 16's stock so you can have 18's etc. Also be careful of the width of your tyres. Legally you can only go 27mm wider than stock in South Australia.
eg. my VN came stock with 205/65 H R15's which means legally i can go to 232 but the closest match is a 225. It had 15 inch rims so legally i can have 17's.
***Wheel sizes for VN Commodores:
6.00 JJ x 14 inch steel wheels with 185/75 H R14 standard on all except S.
6.00 JJ x 15 inch alloy wheels with 205/65 H R15 standard on S, optional on others.
Hey Guys
To set the record straight you are allowed to go either 2 inchs up or down from what it states from the manufacturers tyre placard.
VN Exec only came out with 14inch.
VN S & SS came out with the 15inch.
So if you then go a larger wheel you could only go up to 16inch. And the rolling diameter of the tyre cannot be more or less than 15mm from the original tyre size.
If you do want to go larger in rim size you will need to speak to a Recognised Engineer and he will examine your car and if all goes cool he will change the tyre placard to suit your new rims. You will also need a roadworthy at Regency Park.
The cost for the Engineer is approx $200 - $400 depending on vehicle and then the cost of a R/worthy is $72.
Regarding how wide you can go in tyre size, you can go as wide as you like as long as it is within the vehicle track which works out to be 27mm wider than the std track.
Therefore for VN the front track is 1503mm and the rear track is 1532mm. The measurement is read from the centre of the tyre to the other centre of the tyre.
If you have any questions call Transport SA 1300 882 248.
I would have thought that 18" would be OK as the Group A came out with a 17" wheel?

You just cant put a new tyre placard on the car that easily. I mean whats stopping you putting a HSV VZ GTS tyre placard stating you have 19's meaning you can go to a big fat 21 inch wheel?Originally Posted by mr_l_commodore
The thing stopping you is that the Vehicle Inspector knows what came out on a VN Exec. If you have the money to buy some blingish rims find the money to get it done properly and see and Engineer and get a tyre placard for what ever size you can afford!
hmm thats interesting however all tyre places in adelaide have said i can go 17 but not 18 i have asked is there anyway around it and they would budge the bastards but then i said well the vn exec can only go to which is 16 but the model of the car doesnt matter so much because the shape is basically and they will hold there produce to that so i guess im stuck with 17

Changing the tyre placard is only for stopping defects from the police, not vehicle inspectors.
If you have to go to regency park, you have a month wait which is plenty of time to shove some 16's on your car for legality.
Most police wouldnt have a clue what size rims VN commodores came with. Last time i got defects off my car at Holden Hill, the police officer didnt even know what window tint was. Granted, it was a female and she was blondebut 99% of police would believe VN's could come with 16's or 17's stock which gives you up to 18's or 19's legally
i think you could get away with 18s, as long as its not stupid low at the same time, as for getting away with saying that the car came standard with 17s, i dunno if that would work, remember, only nowadays are cars coming standard with that size rims, and most cops are on the ball, well, all that i have come accross and they generally have a big book of figures with them too. you could get away with 16s, easily, cos a few VN models came out with 16s but 17might be pushin it. If you stick with 17s and a nice ride height, your in the clear legality wise anyway.
and out of curiosity, what tyre places did you visit in adelaide? there are a few i wont deal with, and some i will for life
hmm tell me some places but so far everwhere i have checked refuse to sell and or put on vyss 18's for me i went to bob jane , dunlop , trying brigstone today and a few little companys but i dun really know where to go ... im not rich so i was just gonna get them from bob jane cause u can do a plan on it which would be better is $2000 asking 2 much for vyss rims and tyres and locknuts all new ?

this is interesting, buy the rims, get the tyres fitted and balanced, and take them home and fit them, that would be how i would get around them being asses and not wanting to deal with you. i think 2k may be a bit much, have a look on ebay, the rims themselves are getting pretty cheap these days, and tyres, it depends on what you put on, i tend to go the whole hog and get good tyres, others prefer to rip them up and spend less on them. But each to their own. and for 2k, you better hope they are genuines and not rip offs, you could get some really nice HSV spec rims for 2k.
As for tyre places to try, my recommendation is glenelg discount tyres, great bunch of guys to deal with, and really helpful, they even tried to get some tyres that arnt sold in aus as yet for me, (mind you, i was looking at about the same as the 2k your looking at, but just for 2 tyres, no rims), so have a try with those guys, i cant stand the nig guys, ie, bob jane sand so fourth, never treated me right when i went in there with a fist full of money
If you get into strife, let me know via PM, there are some people i know with thos erims on their VN, ill get into contact with them and find out who did it and how much
Good Luck!!!
I've got a m8 who just bought 18 inch VY SS mags for his VL and he paid $1400 with tyres. Im not sure where from but i can ask if you want.
I actually had 17's put on my old VL at Bob Jane T-Marts on main north road near sefton plaza. And that's illegal so i dont know why they wouldnt accept 18's on a VN. Perhaps try a different Bob Janes?
look up www.tempetyres.com.au they will do 18 inch vy ss rims for 1400 with tyres and locknuts......and will deliver it to ya door for 80 dollars![]()

FOR SALE : supra 5 speed box suite holden v8 $800
I guess it comes down to that the Tyre guys wont sell you the rims because if for instance they do sell you 18s for a VN and you get caught/defected you are going to be the one how goes back to the tyre place and blast them.
It happens all the time.... and the tyre guys get sick of it.
You might come across a tyre place that will sell you them but when you go back to them to get 16s fitted they may say "Too Bad!"
Save up the extra few hundred dollars and get an recognised engineer to affix a tyre placard for 18s on your car.
And no that doesnt mean you can then fit 20's on you car either!
yea im thinking 2k is a bit to much considering they give the same price fitted or not fitted and when i talked to them i asked about getting them not fitted and they still refused 18s which is shit but meh im over the little 18 shit im happy with 17 but i think that 2k is way to much but no idea how else to get em ? i want vyss rims and tyres but i dun have the 2 k to throw around considering im looking at a kit and sound system and finishing the interior , oh bout that the interior is looking mad![]()
