Is it true that if you jump start another car off a VN it will reset the computer? A mate wanted me to jump start his car, but I told him no. Even though I'm not sure, but I sure as hell didn't want to find out!!

I jump started a guy with mine. Not sure if it reset the computer, but I have heard that you should NOT jumpstart some cars - new volvos i think? I dodn't notice any problems when i got him going (he was in a VL, I couldnt just leave him there!)

the car with the good battery you connect the positive lead to the battery, and the negative lead to a known earth, other than the battery.
that wont cuase any issues.
I jump started a supra the other day and didn't have any problems, I had the leads the other way around to what Garth suggested though, I had my end hooked up to both battery terminals, the car with the flat had the positive hooked on, and the neg went to the engine block.
I wouldn't want to have to do it too often, but it works.

doesn't the computer reset everytime you disconnect the battery anyway
Yep, so long as it's disconnected for more than about 30 seconds I think it is. What's that got to do with jumpstarting?

most cars that arent meant to be used to jump start usually wont have both terminals accessable (this was the case of my oldies landrover freelander) but supposedly you can use one terminal and some part of the engine or something
well technically u dont need to jump the car, just put enough charge in it to start it, you could disconnect the battery terminals, connect the jumper leads directly to the battery with the other car on it would drain juice from the cars bat but put enough juice in the other battery to make her turn over

I may get shouted down here, but I thought it would be fairly hard to kill the computer jump starting another car. *ducks for cover*
I've never heard of anyone killing a computer during a jump start. Anyone here know of anyone?

i have heard about computers getting killed but i wouldn't have a clue if it was true or not i've never had a problem
if you have the high beams on it wont do anything to the computer or the car
why?......Originally Posted by mat_rulz
