how do i change the oil in my 1990 vn.Any tips or hints would be helpfull.THANKS.
make sure u got an oil filter, 5lts of oil, and a oil tray. remove the oil sump plug, only one plug on the sump, let oil drain, take oil filter off, then install new filter, put the sump plug back in (tight) then fill, some people buy a oil filter wrench, but i cant see the point in em :P
If possible, jack up the drivers side of the car, just drains a bit more crud out. Also, get the oil warmed up a bit, just helps it come out a bit quicker, and with a bit more junk too.
When it comes to filling, just dump 3ltrs in it straight up, and add the fourth litre slowly, checking the level as it goes in. Some VN's take 4.5 ltrs of oil, some only take 3.5.

Penrite here
lol here it starts :P, the question was
how do i change the oil in my 1990 vn.Any tips or hints would be helpfull.THANKS.
i get an oil filter there only like $5 or less and i get like $15 oil buying expensive oil wont make a noticable differance if u change it every 10,000ks like me(if i got $50 oil i would only change it every 40,000 ks or somehting like that) to me 4 changes is better that 1 change with good oil.
We're just making sure that the poor guy puts good oil into his car. Unlike someone I do know of who actually put cooking oil in there.Originally Posted by fitzy2005

Umm I wouldn't care how good the oil was, like you still get carbon introduced into your oil, so I wouldn't go much past 8,000kms.

I have to disagree here. It is very important to use quality oils of the correct grade for the engine. Oil changes are the best preventitave maintanance you can do for a car or any engine. Why would you sell yourself short? Your seals and bearings are designed for specific viscocitys of oil for sealing, cleaning, and lubrication as well as cooling. Most cheap oils are only 20w50 or 20w40 mineral based types. All commodores after the VL should run a multigrade semi synthetic oil these days. You don't need to spend an arm and a leg, but if you love your car then feed it good blood. I have to recommend Valvoline XLD Engine Armour 15w40. Always been a big fan of Valvoline, except in aircraft engines because it's STUPIDLY expensive, and the Shell stuff is the same.Originally Posted by nathans1987
As for filters, well I used to work at repco, and I can say with conviction i'd never use a cheapie. The repco/ryco/fram/valvoline ones are all good.

Nothing wrong with Castrol GTX2.
Another good reason to not buy a Oil filter wrench, Cause i did and it don't fit it it's to big one size fits all???. My hand fits it
