Hi!
I need to know how a vp v6 motor and ecu can tell whether it is on compression stroke or on exhaust stroke....
my car seems to be backfiring and blowing exhaust out the inlet - with a new crank position sensor.....
Ideas?

Incorrect installation? Either that or perhaps your leads are in the wrong order.

umm the valve opening and closing is all mechnical remember, the ecu cant control when they open... I suggest that if its blowing exhaust throught he inlet, its dropped a valve?
yea i know it's all mechanical (although it'd be a much mroe efficient and powerful motor if valves were solenoids- electronic cam that changes as you boot it!)
I was thinking along the lines of that it's giving it spark and fuel on the exhaust stroke, as opposed to the compression stroke, then by the time whatever's left of the mixture ignites, the inlet valve is open and fires out the intake.
however, it turns out it doesn't matter whish stroke it's on as long as teh timing is all correct.
problem lied in the DFI module - i'd tested another one, but there were other problems that stopped it from firing...
i ended up testing it again after eliminating a lot of other things
and worked nicely.
