The standard H4 bulbs are 60/55W, can I just swap them for 100/80W or do I need to upgrade the wiring/fuse/relay? Or should I just buy better quality 60/55W?
60/55 are fine, go for the 100 watters if you do alot of country driving but then you will have to upgrade the wiring which isnt cheap
or buy narva plus 50s or philips vision plus's, they both give 50% more distance of light. theyre both still 60/55w
I did have a set of 100/80w globes in there, after 4 hours on high beam one night cruising at 110kph, I had sucessfully melted the fuse (not blown the fuse, but melted the plastic casing on it), melted the relay housing, and the holder, and had the insulation dripping off the wire leaving expose wires in the engine bay.
If you want some better lights, go out and get a REAL set of driving lights, and one of those bars that bolt onto the bumper with the number plate (that way you can remove them when you don't want them to be stolen). Would probably workout to be just as expensive as upgrading the wiring, and all the other crap that goes with it.
Gravity is proof that nature keeps getting us down.
Thanks folks
Checked out my lightbulbs. One was a Lumen and the other was an Austa. Replaced them with Philips Premiums and it improved the light output significantly.
So don't buy el-cheapo brands!
Funnily enough the Philips bulbs were about the same price if not slightly cheaper.
how much are they for a pair? livin in latrobe valley in victoria
Have a look at the other 60/55W upgrades as well. My point is that the Lumen and Austa were sub-standard and in my view dangerous to use at night.
cheers for that

Just put a set of narva bull lamps on it you'll see for miles they will shine up to 1.7 klms ahead
I had a set om my patrol, brightest lights on the road and only $89 a light from queensland deisel spares!
awesome lights they light it up like daylight.
