    Default MAP sensor error!!

    hey all,

got my car back yesterday from the mechanics and now im getting error code
33 which is MAP sensor. Question is wat does the MAP sensor do and what are the side effects of a broken MAP sensor?? it has stalled on me once so far, so i am planning to get the part 2moro.
also i have checked the vacuum hose going to it and it doesnt seem to have any cracks or leaks, should i replace that aswell any way??

    thanks

The MAP sensor is probably the most important part in your car, but I haven't read of anyone breaking one before, did the mechanic have that unplugged?

doubt he would of touched it.
now i cant even start my car, reset my ecu and no error codes but still no start! i have had the code one other time in the past but got told by the racv guy that it was because my fuel pump was playing up and the ecu thinks many things when it doesnt have fuel. well so far my fuel pump has been good *touch wood*

anyway, i will going try and start it later.

    cheers

The map sensor is basically a barometric pressure sensor that tells the computer basically where the vehicle is situated in relation to sea level. It is therefore similar to a coolant temp sensor in its operation in how much fuel to allow the injectors to inject. An easy way to test is to connect a scanner to the vehicle and check the map sensor reading prior to starting as to an experienced mechanic the reading is very important. If the sensor is failing it will not inject enough or inject too much fuel into the system and cause the vehicle to not start or stall. There are basically no diagnostic checks for this unit and must be checked with a scanner. The hose is very critical too and there must be no kinks or breaks and the length has to be exact, so you can't just replace with any length of hose. Hope this helps!!!

The MAP sensor is your Manifold Air Pressure sensor is tells the ECU what kind of load the engine is under and how much stick your giving it and the engine uses that vs RPM to calculate how much fuel and how much spark to give the engine, like I said, verrrrrrry important part, it's just about all the VN-VR use to make the engines run the VS onwards use a Mass Air Flow meter instead which is a bit more uncool

On a Series one V6, it is a black rectangular plastic box located nearly central on the upper part of the firewall.

BTW, the acronym 'MAP' actually stands for Manifold Absolute Pressure, not Manifold Air Pressure.
