could be the crank angle sensor. Try pouring cold water over the CAS if it starts thats what it will be.(the crank angle sensor is behind the harmonic balancer on the right side.)
has any one got a pic of this harmonic sensor?

The harmonic balancer is on the front of the engine, on the end of the crank. The fan belt runs around it. The crank angle sensor is near this. It has a wire running out of it.

the harmonic balancer is the biggest pully on the front of the motor. there is only one sensor behind it. on the right side looking at the front of the motor.![]()
how do we fix this, do we have to buy a new one or what

first make sure it is the CAS. They mostly play up when the motor is hot so let it run to normal operating temp then turn it off and try to restart it if it wont start then pour cold water over the CAS if it then starts it is the crank angle sensor. If so you will have to buy a new CAS. then you have to pull the harmonic balancer off.(easiest way to undo the bolt is to put a breaker bar against the ground on the PASSANGER side then turn the motor over so it just cranks.) undo the CAS and install the new one. Then put the harmonic balancer and belt back on.
if it is stuffed how much is this gonna cost me...

$60 ish for the part and about the same again for the labour unless you do it yourself. i heard it can be fiddley if you do it yourself.
Cant remember how much it cost me. i got one from Autobahn but it was less than 100 more than 50 i think. also get some thread locker aswell if you dont have any

could also be the battery, mine plays up when it is hot! it turns ova but very very slowly only when hot though! if it turns over like normal then i most probably the crank angle sensor or dfi module (coil pack).
THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT

you will have to replace it. Its fairly cheap and easy 2 do aslong as u can use a ratchet. I don't know how much a machanic would charge but it can't b that much since it only took me 30 mins at the most and im no machanic just a boilermaker.
Looks like problem solved to me eh?Originally Posted by surfer dude
gday mate. i had the exact same problem with my VS. its jus one of those things that will go wrong with a commodore after time. i was pouring cold water over my crank sensor for weeks. eventually i got off my arse and had it fixed. it was only $200. and now it starts everytime. was urs cutting out while u were driving as well?

its really easy to replace the only hard thing is the fact that it sits behind the harmonic balancer and u have to take the pully off so u need to be have an oversized ratchet or a rattle gun otherwise it can be a real ###cer to get off
im stuck.
i have the gregorys book on the vn and i cant work out wat to do.
can anyone help? please
i was thinking of getten a mechanic to do it but i would rather save that money and get other sh!t done

yeah i got my crank angle replaced after my car stalling on me for every 8 days for about 3 months haha. but yeah 60 for part then 60 for labour, no problems now haha...took the mechanic about 20 mins or so, but he also changed my pads at the same time, got more discount too hahaha yer
VY works currently in PRODUCTION!!
Engine will still be sloow!!!!! ;-)
