My series 1 VN is leaking power steering fluid, and i'm really not sure what to do about it... It looks to be coming from somewhere just under the tank, but like I said I've no idea what i'm looking at. Haven't played with the power steering at all. I checked all my hose clamps are tight, that's all I could think of... doesn't seem to have fixed the problem.
Is this a common issue? Or can someone suggest a reputable workshop in the Canberra area (haven't been here for long) because it SLOWLY loses coolant as well . . .
Cheers
Sam
i have the same powered steering problem so did my uncle his was the high pressure pipe and mine looks like it leaking from where yours is. i find it annoying when i degreased it all down it dosent leak fast enough to see(if u get it fixed tell us so i can do it for cheaper myself :P)
i also have a mate who has a leaking one dont know where it leakes tho. apparently the high pressure hose is a pain to change but its fairly cheap ($30 ish) from what my uncle said about changing his.
Mine leaked at one stage because the o ring was perished from under the power steering reservoir. I unbolted the power steering reservoir and pulled the old one out with a screw driver, popped the new one back in and it hasn't leaked since.
I got many qoutes of up to $800 to fix it, but it turned out to be a 5c O ring.

kilowatts are like drugs, the more you get, the more you want.

A power steering shop up here in Qld. It shouldn't be hard to find one somewhere. It may not solve your problems, but its worth a try.

That's exactly the sort of response I'm looking for - an O-ring seems to be a good place to start. I'll have to figure out how to get the tank off, but that's what a Gregory's manual is for hey...
Will give that a go when I get time for it - probably this weekend.

if the leak is still there after you replaced the o ring, a mechanic's secret is to put a small cup full of brake fluid in (the cup from the brake fluid's bottle is enough) then in next few weeks it'll stop leaking. But it does not work on fast leak only works on slow leak.. I did that with Camira, VP Commdore and Subaru Liberty.

mines not leakng from that plastic container it seems to be leaking from the back of the p/s unit(dont know what the tequnical name is but its the metal bit) is there some type of seal there that i cant see (coz its bolted to t he head/block)
i had a power steering leak....
turned out my pump was blown, and it was spewing from there....
could be anything.. best idea is to start cheap then if that dosnt work replace the next thing...
or just have it looked at :P
anyone else have any trouble taking the pully off the pump?
i had no trouble....it should be easy...although i think i used my air tools to remove the 4 bolts...![]()
air tools makes it soo much easier to remove!!!

my leaks from the cap not sure why to cant see any problems i thougrhg presssure my build up in the container and send it out any hole it can find
was thinking of useing air tools but thought it would have come off easy with a ring spaner i was wrong, the almost plastic bolt rounded in about 10 sec. The first 3 came out almost didnt get them but the 4th one i got out the vice grips and a 3 foot pole and the bolt didnt look very rounded by the end lol. i think it has been out befor and maybe been put back on with air tools that why it was on so tight possibly.?
mine alwase has oil all around the cap maybe it dose 2 but that isnt my problem it empties its self every 1-2 weeks and i see it leaking from the pump so the little bit on the cap dosent worry me and u might find that if your leakes fast you have a leak somewhere else maybeOriginally Posted by VNCommo

When mine started leaking I had no idea where it was coming from. In the end I tracked it down to the seal at the back of the PS pump. I just bought a new pump. But, apparently you can buy all the seals and do it your self.
yeah, but you need special tools to do it yourself I have been told....
i have tracked mine down to the seal in the bac of the pump to i went an dgot a kit yesturday and put it in the pump i have to go get another seal today coz it wasnt in the kit then i'll put it on and see if it works. the old seals were so hard they snaped like plastic. i didnt use any special tools except to get a annoying c clip off.
hmm i've worked on pumps and jacks before and have a set of seal picks - how awkward would that seal kit be?? I've never taken off/apart a power steering pump before though, are they fairly simple?
