    Default is it a LSD?

With out plug colour or tags to tell me how can i tell if the diff is a LSD? With one wheel jacked up, when you turn that wheel should it just free spin. or should it try to turn the other wheel? I've had infomation overload and a strat answer would be much appriceted. Thanks

It should try and turn the other wheel the same direction..

open wheeler the other wheel will turn the opposite direction.

if you jack one wheel up you wont be able to turn it cause it wants to turn both wheel in the same direction. IF you jack both up and turn them get someone to watch the other wheel and turn them. If they turn the same way then you have either an LSD or a locked diff. Hope that helps.

Lift both up and see what happens.

If you have a genuine BT1 it should be LSD.

That would mean open wheeler diff!

Mine confused the hell outta me for while coz with both wheels up and the tranny in neutral the other wheel span the same direction, because there just happened to be enough resistance in the four pinion gears to spin the cage and hence the other wheel with it rather than spinning the pinion gears. Had me pretty worked up until I did what you did and tried it with one wheel up, one down. Then the wheel spun independently against a bit of resistance, the behaviour of the diff matched the tag on it, I looked like a retard and order was restored to the universe.

Oh, and this is gonna seem real random, but Linda I just noticed you're from Young, so if you happen to run into Paul from Young and Country freight, tell him Neil from NTW says he's cute, should freak him out real good. :-)

    Cheers,
    Neil.

if an lsd has dropped it's dinner, it will most likely act as an open wheeler. the best bet is to drop the inspection plate off the back and have a look through the fluid holes in the centre.

    i second that....

I bought my lsd, with a worn center...
put it in my car, both back wheels in the air.... I spun one wheel, the other turned the same way.

After it was fited, and since it was due for a rebuild anyway, i went out "testing" it's functionality...

the next day when i was replacing my "testing" tyres, one wheel spun opposite to the other, and the diff single wheeled lots when under 'testing' conditions.

pop the inspection plate, take a photo, and we'll tell you what it is (basically if the carrier has a bigish hole in the side and you can easily see some gears in there, it's a single - if it's got a much smaller hole, and a squared off kinda shape, and lots of bolts in one side, it's an LSD.

Yes, but you can't go the other way ie. normal diff oil in an LSD. you will burn your clutch pack/cones out
