My good ol' commo makes a loudish whirring noise on startup, that follows with the increase and deacrease of revs. I've had the experience with two different engines in my car (was series I VN now VR), and it hasn't been louder or quiter with either, so im taking it its not engine related? Possibly transmission?
I've heard other VN's do it aswell, some louder, some quiter.. Has anyone else had this and does anyone know what the bloody hell it is?!Haven't really investigated into it, might take out the ol stethascope (screwdriver) tomorrow and have a listen around

I take it that it IS coming from the front of the car? Don't forget that fuel pumps can make a bit of noise.

Hmm yeah its loudest at the front. Its not the fuel pump tho, familiar with that noise. Sounds almost like when ya got a buggered fan in your computer.

Maybe the bearings on one of the pulleys has packed it in. That could be it. Whenever one of my PC fans craps itself, I know how nasty it sounds. Busted bearings on the belt tensioner pulley make a similar sound.

Shit! Forgot to say, it only happens when its cold, and is louder the longer it hasnt been started up, colder the night was etc. Only lasts about 10 mins until its a bit warmer, had a listen around and got nothing out of it. This ones got me stumped..

Do you have any way of recording the sound and posting it here? Describing sounds with text is like trying to tell a blind person what the colour red looks like.
A nasty thought popped into my head. Is it possible that the oil pump isn't working too well when it's all cold? It might not be picking up the oil properly and things might be running a bit 'dry'. Checked your oil pressure recently?

Mine does it too, i'm fairly certain its the bearings in the alternator. Should be an easy fix...
kilowatts are like drugs, the more you get, the more you want.
mine makes like a pumpin kinda noise :S when it has just been started up.. guess its normal for da vn's

mine does the same.. i just paid over 1400 for my VR II to be fixed... i think its normal? :P i dno if its the same sound tho i guess
I recently had massive whirring happening on my V6 and it got louder and louder over a few months. I thought it was coming from the air con compressor or an idler bearing... nope, then I thought it might be power steering - nope! Turned out to be the water pump. It can eventually shit itself and lead to more complicated cooling system issues so you're best off dealing with it ASAP..
Hope this helps.

Seems to be gone now, ive recently had another VR engine put in, under warranty.. and theres no noise eveident now.. weird for the first two to do the exact same noise, and the second not to make any suggestion of it! ah well im not complainin![]()
