Talking I have broken my car again!!

Last night i was driving along the freeway and everything is fine. I had a wierd smell then no more heat and my temperature gauge sat on the very bottom line.
I am hoping it is just the thermostat is stuck open. What do you guys think?

Sounds more like a major coolant leak.If there is no coolant on the sensor it will read zero.

even after driving there was no heat coming out from under the bonnet. Just checked and the radiator is full and the resivour is empty.

If your coolant level is fine, yes a stuck thermostat can cause the car to run cool. It was your description of a funny smell, no heat at the vents & the quick drop of the temp guage that makes me think it was a hose failure.

mine runs just above the first bottom line, i was sorta worried about it running that cool, in most cars the temp needle runs round half way but the vns could just have a different set up, but with ur problem bud i dunno, when u get home park it on paper or anything just to make sure nothing is dripping out or something like that, the smell could be leaking water into something hot or even flying back onto the extractors or somethign, justhave a look round engine bay for coolent splatta or somethign...

Sounds very much like the thermostat is wide open (need a new one). The car would be 'running better' Because engine management will be giving it more fuel to try and warm up. The result is a bit more power, but crap economy.
As for the smell, the air ducts behind the dash give of funny smells everytime the temperature of the air running through them changes enough. (like when you turn off the AC but leave the fan going.
