hey i was wondering how i put a tacho on my vn commodore. do i have to run a wire through the dash. where does the wire go. is it hard to fit one? cheers
Just put a level 2 dash in!!
what about those tachos you stick on your dash. is it posible to fit one of them on?
step one, go to a place that sells tachos, step two buy it, step 3 put it in your car and try not let it fall over
since its an executive, dont you have a tacho in it already?

ok...... you will have prob three wires coming out of the taco... one will go to ground(earth) the others will be for accesories and signal wire. the signal wire will run to a brown wire on the passenger side of the engine there's a loom there which has a small white plug hanging out...on the end of the plug will be a brown wire by it's self. that will give you signal.
make sure the taco is on the correct setting or you will be doing 8000rpm changes.,.hahaha
ok thanks. how do i get the wire through the dash? will i have to take out the dash or something? what side is it better on. the side right hand side of the steering wheel or the left? and na my car doesnt already have a tacho for some reason.
NOTE: The wire colors might not be the same on all Tachs.
Its pretty straight-forward installation but as for the Green Wire (refered to diagram) can be connected to the signal wire found next to the Right Strut Tower (looking at front of car) in the Engine Bay (White Connector and Brown Wire, which may be hidden under some tape). Run a new wire from the connector back through the Firewall to Tacho.
Hope That Helped![]()
i say go for a level 2 or 3 dash instead

where can i get a level 2 or 3 dash from. how much and are they hard to install?
Go for a Level 2, that way you don't have to rewire ANYTHING. All you need to do is remove the old cluster and put the new one in. So long as you know which end of a screwdriver to hold on to you're set.
Check out wreckers for a Level 2 cluster.
Gravity is proof that nature keeps getting us down.
if you use a Level 2 Cluster, does the original wiring harnes and connector in dash(VN series 1 with no tacho) have the wire for the tacho ready?
or still need to run the single wire from engine bay as described earlier ?
any idea what prices are Level 2 Clusters ?
thanks
yep the wiring is all there for level 2. only need to modify the wiring for a level 3

I just had a look.. and there's no wire (I can see) that fits the description under the bonnet.. possible for a picture to be taken?
it might be in a different place in a VR. i was referring to a VN/VP. i will try to get around to taking a picture later on if no-one has taken one.
Passenger side strut tower trent. Mine was taped behind the tower. Its a solid brown wire (no trace).Originally Posted by tr3nt

hey i just lookd to and found the wire but i got a few tacho's floating round but they wont register a signal off that wire??? can anyone help??
yeah, the signal will be around .5 to 1.5volts, it sucks, it means you need a GM Coil Pack converter, i bought a really small 2 inch tacho and had it nicely housed on the dash, ( I HATE RICEY TACHOS! ) and it didnt work cause it wasnt a 12v signal.
instead of ****in around with a extra GM part, i just gave up.
#### the ####ing ####ers!
yea you can join me and the rest of the people who couldnt get a tacho working on that wire not to mention 3 other wires that also had a singal. I gave up and got a level 2 dash.Originally Posted by tweakt

there is an artical i found in a street machine magazine that you can hook your tacho straight up to the wire in the engine bay (vn) without an adaptor. i can scan it and post it up if any1 wants a look at it. its called "tach tech".
Could you please send it to me if you have time. thanks mate
yeah if you could scan it, that would be great.
if its too small to read. save it to your desktop (or wherever) and open it with the "windows picture and fax viewer" (should be default application and open when when you click on a picture) and zoom in on it.
i have marked out the paragraph in red. (pretty obvious lol)
