hey i have a vn commodore and i have a 2.5 inch exaust on it from the cat. i have heard that you can take the cat off and cut the guts out and run a straight pipe through it so it still looks legal. would this work or is it a load of crap. would it make it run and sounds better. how much would a hight flow cat cost me and do they make my car sound and go better? cheers

Dont bash out the cat, its a $10,000 fine when you get caught. Commodore ones flow pretty well, thats why i got a second on on my VN . You can pick up hiflows pretty cheap i think though...

Jack's right, when the EPA nail you for it it's a big fine. And don't say it won't happen, it takes a five second test with a thermometer on the side of the road for a cop to issue a canary and order an EPA test.

Let's face it though, with the punched out cat the fumes are a dead give away.

If you're really worried about loss of power due to a cat, get twin stock cats. I've heard of that mod being done (having twin stock cats in a single pipe) and it's meant to flow REALLY well.

trust me.. my car never used to have a cat... you cant tell without the proper equipment. even had my car went over with it hollowed out. I WOULDNT suggest it thought. Just leave the stocko on there. hi flows arent worth it unless yours running boost

i have heard that the stock cat flows pretty damn close to a hi flow cat
so no need to fear, extractors is what should be near

you can pick up hi-flow cats for around $300 installed...although the trend of this thread so far has said its not worth it, i disagree.
maybe not if you've only cat a cat back systems, but if you've got extractors and full 2 1/2" pipes they're well worth it and improve performance and exhaust note...without one on a good exhaust system your just choking it up.

Maybe if your just replacing the cat and leaving a stock exhaust it would be worthwhile, but if your doing a cat back exhaust, just get 2 pipes! Thats what I did. A commodore cat is 50 bucks at the wreckers, and a twin cat system doesnt cost much more than a single pipe one... The flow is on most hi-flow cats it wont beat 2 stock ones combined...

im for the high flow cat, 3" on a 2.5" catback exhaust, extrctors....i got one about a month ago.the high flow cat improves note it also made my fumes smell not as harsh which i would presume my old cat was near gone.
why would you bother getting one from the wreckers for $50 when it is prob on its way out. But its your money and choice so bang for buck id say just get new cat but if money isnt a prob get the high flow.

I'm not too knowledgable in exhaust systems, just wondering how 2 cats would improve flow? Would you use a cat on each bank, before entering a single pipe, and therefore not forcing as much exhaust into one cat?

    Cheers

i was wondering that aswell? how do you put 2 cats on. do u put them on the same pipe one after the other and how does this improve flow? i would this 2 would just choke it more? and do old cats clog up after 17yrs or do they still flow well?

Allowing for the fact that he didn't throw a several thousand dollar fine at you why the hell would you give the guy the finger? Seriously? He's doing his job, you were in an unroadworthy car and you got busted. If anything it's people like you who should get the finger, not the cops.

i have tested my vn with standard cat, high flow and gutted out cat and on the qtr mile and 0-100 a gutted cat did better than any cat. If u want to risk getting caught just gut ur cat. Leave the outer shell of the cat on ur exhaust so if a cop looks under ur cars he will still see u have a cat there.

It takes the cops only a few seconds to be able to test to see if the cat has been gutted or not. All it takes is one of those little point and click thermometers that Jaycar sell for about $20.

If it's working there is a big temerature change across the cat, if it's empty (or even with a pipe in it) there is little to no temperature drop.

And the smell is a fairly dead give away.

as if you condone that man... Why do ppl have to be like that to police? They are doing their jobs and remember they are around to protect people...in most situations they are our friends, not enemies.

But i bet he felt like a real big man sticking a finger up driving away while the cop probly had his back turned...

Its things like that that put cops in bad moods so that the next poor p plater they pull over gets a major defect because they are looking to get back at 'p platers' that do that sorta thing...however this goes for all people not just p platers
