    Default Engine Bay Heat

So I've run into a slight problem of some crazy engine bay temperatures... which in turn increase intake temperatures.... which in turn make me go slower.

After any ideas to coooool the engine bay down a fair bit - withOUT using scoops on the bonnet

It shouldnt be producing so much heat if nothing was wrong. What is it reading on the guage?? I would start looking at a thermostat and flushing the system.

water temp is fine..... nice and cool with an 81 deg thermostat and a fatter radiator... reads about 1/4 of the way up the idiot gauge and likes to stay there.

engine BAY temperatures is that I'm worried about - there's a supercharger and a set of extractors in there that get nice and hot, and heat up the air inside the engine bay, which doesn't do me any favours.

I need better airflow through the bay... but stumped as to how i go about this without putting scoops etc on the bonnet.

you could stop the transfer of heat from the headers with some thermo wrap or heat shielding over them...maybe have some twin thermo fans instead of the single....i dont know what type of induction setup you have, but thermo wrap around induction pipes could stop some of the heat getting in.

A stock ba falcon has heat shielding over the headers. Not sure if its there to stop hot air getting into the engine bay or so you dont burn youself.

Yeah definately get twin thermo fans, heats shields on exhaust and thermo wrap on intake pipes are the go especially with those chargers, they pump alot of heat into the intake manifold.

Thermo wrap your extractors, and duct 2 pipes from front/underneath of car into engine bay to circulate air.

Could try pulling off the rubber strip that runs across the back of the engine and sits between the firewall and bonnet when closed. That should give the hot air place to go when you are moving.

Just did that the other day - a bit cooler but not too much difference.

I could ever-so-slightly lift the back of the bonnet, but it would look pretty tacky...

i don't want scoops/flutes/grilles anything like that. car needs to look completely stock from outside.

i agree with hozy, just add some pipes leading up fromt he bottom of your front guard into your engine bay...should be easy to hide and! good at a bit of cooling.

I don't think taking off the seal strip from back of bonnet is a good idea; the fresh air intake for the cabin is just behind it and should never be exposed to engine bay fumes - very dangerous and could render you unconcious whilst driving (remember suicides with exhaust gas into cabin).

The engine bay will seem hot when you stop but this is quite normal - if you route any cold air ducts into the engine bay you will defeat the pressure differential between the front of car and the rear of radiator and will actually cause the cooling to be decreased - that is why air dams and various baffles are already used in front of radiator and beneath engine (see Gen II V8 sump cowells that are mandated for cooling ) to create decreased pressure behind radiator to encourage air flow through radiator and then around engine. If the Coolant runs at say 95C then the air entering engine bay is probably 40c to 60c and is MUCH cooler than engine and exhaust manifolds etc and is already cooling them. Just seems hot to humans when you open the bonnet

hehe way to dig up an old thread!

for the record, engine bay temps were solved when i put an intercooler in!

turns out that with the cooler piping etc the air coming out of the charger had somewhere to expand, which brought down the charger temperature from a "it burnt my hand" temperature to more of a "i can touch this!" temperature.

i also ran the thermo fan constqantly after water temp went over 96 degrees or so.
