hey i have a 2.5 inch catback system and it still has the two mufflers. i think the end one is called the resinator. Has anyone taken it out and put in a hotdog? i went to the exhaust place and asked about getting the ressie takin off all together and he said if you do that you will loose low end power because VNs need some back pressure or somfin and he said you can put in a hotdog to make it sound better. just wondering if anyone has a hotdog and if it will make any good sounds difference or if its a waist of time n money. cheers
From my experience having no muffler would make the car sound louder (if you wanted) and there is a slight lost of bottom end (gain mid/top end) strightpipe (muffler to end) would cost about $60(priced a year ago).
Straight pipe is good...i got one.... i dont even have a bloody clue what a hot dog is?????
I makes mine sound good....you obviosuly got a shit house 2.5 cos is should be prety loud..my vp sounded sweet with a cat back 2.5 system....anyway...i still got heaps power and a good note!
aZk.
is it too loud that its illigle cause i dont wana get defected or anythin cause i got cut spings so i will have to redo my suspension to pass it throught rego and i dont have much money at the moment.
i just got a RWC with it...ie tonight! and it passed, 3 differnet mechanics didn't notice it..so id say no....
aZk...whats a hotdog?
It all depends on the type of muffler is on the car already.Originally Posted by coolvncommodore
With the sport exhaust I asked them to use a sports muffler then stright through pipe. I not as loud as a V8 on idle and reving but it makes a nice note when driving.
I think a hotdog it just a smaller resinator. im just a P plater so the cops are always checking my car cause i got big wheels and have done it up abit. When i park my car at school the cops are always defecting cars cause its full of P platers that are doing up there cars illegaly. it pisses me off i cant do anything with my car without vehcle inspectors going over it with a magnefine glass. so do u think it will be ok if i just take the resinator off?
Do they teach spelling at that school of yours?
A hot dog is a resonator. So if you go to buy a hot dog from Lukey its called a "hot dog resonator". I would just take the resonator off and have a straight through pipe.
i dont have a rear resinator.ive heard putting one on give a lower end power gain.how much power roughly as i love the sound of my exhaust and i love power too so i am weighing up options
Yeah i went to the exhaust place the other day because i was going to get my rear resinator takin out and he said if you take it out you loose abit of lower end power. not sure how much but i dont think it would be much. Does your car backfire or pop abit when taking your foot off the throttle? A guy at school has takin his out and it sounds awsome, it just pops and stuff when off the throttle. he said its because it doesnt have much back pressure anymore. is this true or is his car just running sh*t. Im still thinking about getting mine out im just scared about getting defected. have you had any problems with the cops?
i rarely get the popping even when i shift into 2nd or 1st while decelerating. But i dont want to lose my awesome sound......a bloke that works at midas has a VL and when he went for a drive he said F@#K i want your exhaust.....i had a pinhole leak in it the other week and he said there is no way you should be able to hear it but when he took it for a spin he couldnt believe it was noticable. Is that a bad thing or a good thing that the hole was heard when it shouldnt have. He was stumped about that one.
I think it depends whether the hole is infront of the muffler or behind, because on my old exaust i had a pinhole just after the muffler and you couldnt notice but then i got anotherone just infront of the muffler and you could notice it. thats when i got a new exhaust. so do the cops ever pull you over for having a car thats too loud? I want to take my resinator off but dont wana get defected.
ive been pulled up for speeding then floored it after taking my speeding ticket they didnt even look upOriginally Posted by coolvncommodore
I dont think being pulled over for your car being too loud is very common...it would draw attention but actually being defected for it? Theres some jap crap and wrx's going around that are extremely loud...same goes for some of those old 308's and 350's with dual exhausts...those things can be loud as fu**.
i am yet to learn of anyone who drives a v6 commo with a sports exhaust to be pulled up by cops cause its to loud.....a v8, yes but not a 6. taking the ressie off is not illegal and it will sound alot better, most exhaust places dont even include the ressie in a sports system.......take it to a exhaust place and they will cut it out and put a straight thru pipe in for about 30bucks.
as for ur other question....a hotdog is a smaller ressie, ur exhaust note will be slightley quieter with one of these compared to a straight thru, but they still sound awesome.
jokes..ahahaha i get jokes
ok thanks alot guys
Ok, can someone give me a definitive answer? If I was to have the resonator cut out of my 2.5" exhaust system and a straight pipe put in in it's place, would this effect low-end torque (due to lack of backpressure) and would it have any other effects such as being TOO loud or any increases in fuel use?
Note: I'm running a CAI and K&N on the intake so this may effect things too.
It seems like a low-cost way to add noise and maybe a little top end torque to a 2.5" catback system.
Thanks guys...

Apologies for the double post... I'm at work and the filtering proxy here does strange things.
Anyone got answer for fazz197's question?
Its effect to low end torque would be very minimal and depending on the rear resonator it may not effect much in terms of sound either. I would always keep a resonator just to stop droning because droning sounds like crap.
Cheers guys.
droning??? the only droning i get is for the first 3 min in the moring when cold and thats only at about 2500 RPM if you hold it steady.
do manuals drone worse than autos?
i wanna cut off the rear ressie in my VR dunno whether to add a hotdog or not.
got quoted 110 bucks to cut off original resonator and weld in a hotdog, 70 bucks to cut it out and put in straight through pipe.
Go the hotdog anyday..
Who wants a loud drone when you're sitting at the traffic lights or gently cruising at 1800rpm on the highway. You want it nice and quiet then..
But making noise once the foot goes down.. That's how mine is set up and I love it..
