Hi,
I was attempting to replace the engine mounts on my VN, and have had problems with a tight nut on the bottom of the mount.
Tried using an extension bar - started to strip nut.
Tried using an air-impact hammer, eventually rounded the nut.
As you may know, this nut is inside a hole, and you cannot use a spanner / nut breaker tool on it, can only fit a socket in the hole.
I Wld love to know how to remove this now! I'm thinking of getting another nut, and spot welding it to the original nut, then try to unscrew that one.
Any ideas greatly appreciated!!!
Can you you get to the head of the bolt with a grinder? if so, cut it off and knock out the bolt..
Probably no to the grinder.... might be possible if the mount base is not soild metal... but i am doubtful that this will be an option.
can you heat the nut? thats what i needed to do when i changed the suspension
get the biggest drill bit u can find and get a power drill and drive the SOB out,
happened to me when i was removing my tow bar, it one bolt was locked shut, had to drill it out....
hope that helps
you can get these things from bunnings that are a socket especially made to remove stripped nuts. Its got all these pins that you just push over the nut and they fit its shape - as long as its not perfectly round, it should grab something...
heres the website: http://www.endeavorproducts.com/ggrip/ggrip.html
lol gotta hate that... i think hte only way you will get it out as someone already said is to drill the basted out. Have fun with that by the way. Thats what had to be done to my zorst when i got my cat back installed.. stupid bolts werre cross threaded.
what size is the nut? what you can do is use the next size down in imperial ie. 10mm down to 3/8.........put the socket on your extension or however youre doing it and locate the socket with the flats matching (as if you were going to slip it on) and hit the socket onto the nut. sounds brutal i know, but if you hit the socket on far enough, you will have a good purchase on the nut. i have done this personally and if you do it like i explained and try not to wiggle the socket sideways too much, you should be alright.
you can use a centre punch and give it hit and work it of this is how i would get screws that were stuffed and it works a treat
I remember when i was doing the headgasket on my 5L V8 VB. I snapped about 4 bolts into the block.
I used an easy out. They look like large screws with revers threads. Drilled a hole into the studs and screwed the easy out in the nut. When it got tight it started to remove the studs.
if he has rounded a nut, easy outs would be pretty much useless to him....dont get me wrong, given the right application, theyre worth their weight in gold
Drill would be the best option if its under the car - that would be last thing i would do. use a hummer & patch to make a small dot for as drill guider.. If its in the engine - you'll have to undo the bolts that is attached on the engine block. been there done that - even head bolts as used reverse impact drill.
Cheers

Had this trouble on a VS and i believe we used an angle grinder or hacksaw
Thanks for all the advice guys...
GOWLZ - not sure how heating the nut wld help, too late for me try, maybe next time before I round the bastard!
PARADOX & COMMY92 & ALPINERAVEN - Drill will be my last option, but getting close to attempting that! There is easy access to the nut, so will be quite easy to punch the bottom of the bolt and start drilling away.
ECOTECMANIAC - Great idea, i will try the closest imperial socket and smack it on with a hammer, certainly worth a shot!
Anyone ever welded another nut to the original one, and then wound that one off?
Could also use a cold chisel to break the nut in half (each side if it will fit in).
Ecotec is on the money mate, Try that first. I reckon you will have success.
Also if you are using a really cheap shitty socket set be careful, you might split a socket when u go to put force on it and smack your hand/ fingers into something when it breaks if it that tight.
Good luck!
