I've just bought a motor for my VN for $100. I'm pretty sure its a series 1 motor. And mines a series 2. The bottom ends screwed, but that doesn't worry me as I only bought it for the injectors.
But just incase I need anything else of it in the future, what is interchangable between the two motors from the top end? Is there anything that can't be used on the series 2 from the series 1?

If you got the throttle body with it you can use that and should be able to use all the sensors on the motor (handy) you can use the series one exhaust manifolds if you have those but not much else will fit
As far as I know its the complete motor. I only wanted the injectors because mine are screwed. But he would only sell it to me as a complete motor because he wanted it out of his shed.
On another note, I noticed the other day that on the top of my motor, where it says 3800, where it joins to something towards the back of the motor, there has been something leaking. It looks to be the colour of petrol, but you can wipe a bit off and it doesn't smell like anything at all.
Should I be worrying about this? What could it be?

Take a picture of where it's leaking from or draw it, where it says 3800 is the inlet manifold, oil could leak out of the bottom of it where it joins to the motor, fuel could be leaking from the little rubber hose that come off towards the drivers side, but only if the hose and the fuel regulator are broken. Anyway take a picture of the leak
I don't have a camera, and I can't draw to save my life! If you run your hand along the top of the inlet manifold towards the windscreen, you'll see where it joins to something that then runs back along the windscreen to the throttle body. The leak (appears) to be coming from that join directly at the rear end of the inlet manifold.
Do you know where I mean?!

Ok, where it joins to the alloy bend that joins to the throttle body? There should be two gaskets there with a bit of plastic in the middle. There shouldn't really be anything leaking from there, but it's easy to fix if it does have an air leak, is a whistling sound comming from the motor?
Yes! That's the spot!! Whistling sound? Not that I've noticed. Only thing I have noticed is that there is a redish like liquid substance around that join.

I wouldn't worry about it, seal it up better if you ever happen to have the bend pulled off
Is there a gasket there at all? If there is I might just get a new gasket for it. If not, what else could i use to seal it?!

Yeah, should be a couple of gaskets I'd say unless someone has pulled the plastic bit out the series 2 engine had to try and get a bit more power (common thing to do) and then done it back up with no gasket or a broken one, a gasket for that is like a dollar from Holden :P so if you want to do that it's nice and cheap.
It's bed time now![]()
series 1 engines dont have the belmouth.. (plastic bit) ide say its gasket sealer or something that has got fuel on it or it could even be auto trans fluid or somemthing.. I personally wouldnt worry about it unless after you whipe it off it comes back. If it does first thing i would be doing is replacing the gasket and using gasket cement all way around it.. that should fix the basted. if it dont i have know idea where to go from there. craked maifold maybe????
