I am concidering changing my 2 piece tailshaft for a one piece? has any one done this? My car is only lowered to fe2 height. Will it make the drive ruff, Your opion would be greatly appriciated.![]()
I didn't do it
Why do ya wanna do that? In my opinion it would be a very expensive exercise in futility, but as long as it was well balanced it probably wouldn't feel any different at legal speeds. Ford are still running a one piece tailshaft, or they were up to the AU, which is why base models were limited to 180km/h. Theres gotta be more important things to spend the money on though right?
Some of the B series Ford still run one piece tail shafts.Originally Posted by pandaman
The good thing about a one piece is you have less loss thru the drive line of your car. But I dont think you would be able to do it on the VN model, with clearance problems.
Ideally our cars are running live axle and having one piece shaft would cause some issues due large movement of the diff moving around. If the car has IRS then it could be ideal but there would be some drive line vibration. The reason for having 2 peice shaft is to minimise driveline vibration also reduce the angle of movment from the gearbox to the center bearing which would keep the seal aligned reducing wear on one side of the gearbox case.
Less drivetrain losses is a valid point, but the power lost through that one joint/collar would be absolutely bugger all in the grand scheme of things.Originally Posted by vztrt
Well put SlowVac, although live rear axle falcons don't seem to have too many problems related to tailshaft angle, I do have a vague memory of a bloke who did something particularly odd to the suspension on an X-series who kept chewing unis, but thats the only incident I'm aware of.
