    Default Cheap SprayPainters?

Does anyone know of someone who would be willing to paint the outside of a VP Boot Lid for a case of beer or something similar?

I have painted it myself with the Touch Up spray cans but it's very uneven. I really need to do it with a spray gun but I don't have the sort of money to invest in a spray gun, paint, and a compressor just to paint one body part.

If a case of beer is not enough, maybe $50 or something. Make me an offer if you are able to spray it for me.

Unfortunately my wife and I are both unemployed and are always stuck for cash so we can't afford to take it to a pro. I'm hoping a pro or someone who knows what they're doing would be kind enough to do it for me cheaply.

Where are you getting your boot done gocommygo?

im mates with a guy who owns a panel shop here, seriously your best bet would be to DIY just take off ya boot, sand it back, primer it and spray, then clear coat it, i did my boot garnish and interior bits myself and im doing my bumpers myself

Well that's what I've already done. I used paint stripper to dtrip back the paint, then sanded it back with 800grit, then gave it two coats of grey primer, then one coat of colour, then finally the clear coat. The reason I only gave it one coat of colour is because it was costing me $10 a can. I needed two cans per coat, which means I had to buy 4 cans of primer ($40), two cans of colour ($20), and two cans of clear coat ($20) which is $80. If I was to give it another coat of colour it would have cost me a further $20, which for a backyard spray job is pretty expensive, especially for us.

I really need someone who sprays for a living or is excellant at backyard jobs on the cheap, but doing a great job.

Here are some pics of how my spray job come out. As you can see it surely needs more work done to it.

It's actually not that good. The pics don't capture the light very well so you can't tell, but if you saw in person you would say it needs more work also.

you need more layers of paint dude, followed by more clear coat,

not a bad job tho, good idea with the primer lots is good, but yeah use more paint and if u want it shiny use lots of clear coat, remember to key each layer of paint (take a fine layer off with sand paper so the next coat of paint will stick so it dosnt flake later)

anyway yeah, u should have 2-3 coats of paint and around 2-3 coats of clear coat... i know its expensive but it means the diffrence between a pro and backyard job, using a spraygun and buying in bulk is cheaper, ie. u can buy paint for $40 per litre and clear coat for $20 a litre, i know what its like to be out of work... a unfourntuate work accident saw me off work for 7 months... then my employer screwed me over and didnt pay compensation which they were ment to, and i was off work without the capacity to work for 7 months... oh well im recovered now and working again.. sucks.. especiall when your only 18

yeah, atleast you got a colour match =)

got any pics of it before spraying???

most of the time its best not to go back to metal if its a touch up job, like, just take off the clear coat and cut into the top layer of paint a bit, then spray over it, the trick to getting it smoth is clear coat, if you dont have enough it will feel rough and look rough..

Do yourself a favour, get your hands on something like an Easy Sprayer, little beaver. It's a little electric spray gun, they would be ideal for a small section like this. I have used one on many occasions to prime a car of 5. The trick here is practice, pracitce and more practice. Don't go out buying cans, save your money and do it properly, so far it's cost you $80 and it's going to cost atleast another $40, that $120 already, you could've went to 3D and got just about everything you'll need for that. It won't matter if you got the worlds best spray painter to do it, it's not going to turn out with the greatest quality as it's a spray can. Get your materials and then you could even approach a small panel shop to just do the bootlid. Tell them you have all materials, and you just need someone to paint it.

I have seen those electric spray guns for $40, but then I have to find a colour match to add to the spray gun. How much paint would I need to cover the boot lid and what's the rough price per litre? Is it possible to just buy a few litres or do you need to buy the who can?

1 litre should be enough. By the time you thin it out and everything, it should be heaps. Places that specialise in automotive paint should sell in that quantity.

Is it a metallic colour paint?

Yes it is metallic. I have been using the PowerPlus Acrylic cans. The paint code is 2B074: Sapphire Blue Metallic.

Can you buy paint by the litre in acrylic?

Yep. I don't know if you have Colourworld up there, but they can do just about any colour in acrylic or 2-pak. For a metallic colour, I'd say keep about $60 per litre, just to be sure.

Find a place that specialises in automotive paints, and take the paint code in there. All their paints are mixed on the spot. All they'll do is put the code in to the computer and it tells them exactly what colours and how much of which are needed to make you specific colour. And they'll just make up whatever amount you need. i've known people to get as little as 500mls.

Definately look up colourworld, and see if you have them up there. thats where I get all my paint and acceessories from.

3D painshops do automotive paint. 1 litre will cover it, pretty easy with quite a few coats.

Here is a brief shopping list, i usually get for this very thing, but i buy it in larger amounts.

A Clean stirring stick, it would be best to use a 30cm long piece of Aluminium, easy to clean, you can buy proper measuring sticks from paint shops, not sure on price. These (for me) serve 2 purposes, 1. to stir the paint, and 2. to indicate if i need more paint or thinners, or if it's spot on.

1-2 sheets of 600 wet & dry. Use this to rub down your old paintwork, to take the glossyness off it. Don't rub it back to hard though, and never use your fingers, finger marks are a bitch. Use th flat of your hand, or a hard, flat solid rubbing block,

1 Litre can of Prepsol (wax & grease remover). Can't stress this enough. Once you have rubbed it down properly, wash it down and dry it off with a clean chamios. Use 2 clean rags, and they need to be clean, once it's dry, pour some prepsol onto a rag, but don't soak it, enough to clean the bootlid. Wipe the bootlid down with the rag, and wipe it off immediately after applying it.

5 Litres of Thinners. You will need 5L because there is also the clean-up to consider. I'm a panel beater, not a painter, and my rule of thumb of mixing paint and thinners is a simple one. When you have stired the thinners into the paint, and you remove the stick, and you can just see through it, it's usually good to go. Everybody has their own way, but this one works for me.

1 Litre of paint. You will possibly still have some paint left after spraying your bootlid. Put it in a seperate tin, not back in with the leftover paint, it'll go off and you will have none left for something else. Remember to always have a bit more in your gun, than you really need, that way you will not run out half way through. Don't think that the more coats, the better it will be, it doesn't work like that, both with primmer and paint. 3-4 good coats is plenty, possibly 5 at the most.

2 Litres of clear. You will need a fair bit of thinners for this, as clear is thick, right from the word go. Even for me, measuring this is a bit of guess work, i still use the same principle as before, but you may to add a bit more thinners. Make sure you give this a good stir, a damn good stir.

I hope this helps you out. if you need anymore help, just speak up, and i'll see if i can help you out.

An airbrush set-up is a completely different thing. The little electric units i'm talking about hold about a litre of paint, maybe more. they will paint bumpers with no drama, they will last forever if you look after it, i've had mine for about 3 years now. Great little tool to have, you can get them through CIG, E bay have them from time to time. Most hardware stores will have them, just ask them for an easy beaver spray gun, they should know what your looking for.
