Default VN, VG, VP, VQ sway bar link upgrade

ok, did this upgrade saturday, it is for vn to vq, sedan, ute, wagon, etc.

i got a nolathane kit, which cost around 35 retail.

its a straight bolt on job, no drilling or anything.

the kit number is 42170, comes with new rods, bushes, nuts, etc.

it actually reverts the link back to pre vn setup, which is better. it doesnt use the strut as the link point, it uses a hole in the control arm, which reduces strain on the strut in cornering, etc.

i assume you could also goto the wreckers, steal a vb-vl sway bar link and all nuts, bushes, etc off it and just get new bushes for a vb-vl.

i have attatched a scanned copy of the instructions on how to do this.

i havent driven the car much since doing it, but what driving i have done, it has improved quite a bit, but i alsp installed a new tie rod end and havent done much hard cornering, etc yet.

hope this helps and a few people consider doing this mod. have a read of the pic aswell, it explains more about why it works.

Yeah! I read about this famous "heavy duty" link upgrade ages ago but never realised it was the bits from the early cars bolted onto a VN, nice one

wat is it actually improving on??
ive heard that it makes the steering a little easier and thats about it....oh and that it throws the camber angle out of wack but i dont think thats true

dont think it will throw camber out, but it improves steering under load and over bumps, etc. stops snapping link rods, stops damaging the strut bracket, requiring replacing whole strut.

read the picture i put up, it says it all there.

but when i put em on, moving the hub assembly with stock link, you could see it twist pretty bad, after putting them on, moving the hub, shows no twist in the link, which means one less thing making steering harder.

well, ive had mine in for wat, 4 months now, steering feels great compared to standard vn setup. no problems watsoever.

good to hear mack, it really is a worthwhile change. even goto the wreckers and get the links from a vb-vk and some new bushes for it, if you wanna save some $$.

but id get a brand new kit, theyre not that dear anyway.

Ive got it sitting right next to me, I spent heaps on nolothane parts, bought new rack ends, tie rods, link pins, new bushes for the controll arms. Hopefully she will feel great!

ahh, cool bananas. dont forget to grease the nolathane bushes that come with bags of grease.

we had a bloke bring back a set of rear bushes for his falcon, they were shagged after 2 weeks. he didnt grease em, yet theres free bags of grease!!

nolathane were nice enough to give him a rerplacement set, ONE set, but if he did it again, no more freebies. will get a pic next time im at work.

Interesting that you mention that. Where abouts do you grease, like if you have a crush tube that goes inside the bush , you grease inside the bush hole, what about greasing the outside of the bush that touches the metal?

np, will be good to see more people doing it, its definately worth it. i double checked a price for paradox616 at work(autobarn) tonight, retail $40.99 so cityboys should get it cheaper.

make sure you quote them the part number 42170 or they will try and sell you the heavy duty standard link style kit for about $50 like they tried with paradox616 today.

The premium Adjustable rear panhard rod... the one thats on car adjustable.

And a Whiteline Strut Brace. Looking at sway bars too but undecided at the moment. With swaybars, Im not sure which ones are best suited to my car?

Will make a thread and organise that after I get this stuff out the way..

$165 for the Whiteline one, minus my motoquipe discount

Is the nolathane a 6 point one or a 3 point?
