Exclamation Wanting to Start engine work, where to begin?!

    hi all,
i own a VN SS, 1990 model and have made mainly cosmetic mods such as 19" wheels, full respray and sticler kit and lowered the the ass end, i have put a 2 1/2" exhaust on from the cat back.
Was looking to do some engine work just wanted to no where to start as far as value for money goes. Perhaps port and polish??

Also i have been told new extractors and i high flow cat should be next but is that really going to help performance for the money it will cost
any input would be appreciated thanx alot

Chip retune, cheapest go fast for the 5 liter, then twin cat, twin muffler exhaust. Insta low 14's in a VN. The heads on the 5 liter are the best part and you wont need to touch those untill you are going very very fast

pretty much cleans away all the crap built up in the valve ports, like carbon n stuff.

arrgh :P really you remove metal to increase the flow passed the valves, which is the most restricive part of just about any engine. The VN 5 liter happens to be just a bit special in that area and the stock heads can flow enough air to support 450? Horsepower without touching them, 500 with slight grind here and there. It's the entire reason that engine is so good

Also matching the intake manifold to the heads to get rid of overlap etc.

For the Total cost of less than 100$ you can easy have you chip upgraded to better than clubsport power (way better) if you do it yourself. Or you can pay Dr Bob some more and have it all done for you, Bob's chip has enough mumbo to get into the 14's in a 5 liter executive auto (or probably an SS ), those are your options

Not really, but in other threads around the place, you need a eprom burner, they cost about $60-$70 and a couple of 2$ parts and a liter quick lesson in how the main spark table and air fuel table work, bit of copy and pasting and your done good enough, you might be 5rwkw out from a custom tune but you'll be well in front of a clubsport

Anyone know if a port and polish does much on the 3800 V6?
Thinking of buying a head for cheap and giving it a go myself.

VN Commy if your not scared of swapping heads on your car and have a die grinder and a carbide cutter AND some safety glasses, it will definatly give your car the edge over just about any other V6 on the street. Heads are everything on that engine, you should be able to find some stuff on the internet about porting and there are some good books about it too.

bush basha, get a willem programmer off ebay, guys in honk kong sell them good and cheap. It's easy to make your own chip with a quick cut and paste from some of the more sporting ones even if you don't know what your doing

by far the best would be new manifold. Harrop. Those bananas are the worst design. Get more air let it breathe. While your there new cam and lifters. Retune and your done. Then exhaust. id be lookin at mid to high 13s depending on diff ratio. If you match everything. The bottom ends are quite sturdy.
