engine not starting

Hi i have a 89 vn commodore, when i turn the key to on, the fuel pump sounds gravelly, then when i go to kick it over all i get is a noise which is mixed between ticking and thunping coming from the block (no noises from pump were apparent yesterday), and also i bridged the two wires together to do a self test, and a ticking noise comes from under the hood while doing the self test and the engine light just keeps flashing (no breaks), is there any ideas to what it could be???
