    Default Irs?

    hi there

just wondering, can any vp shell have irs fitted instead of a fixed axle, or are there different types of shell/chassis for either type of rear suspension??

    cheers,
    L

The VP was the first commodore to have IRS, standard on Calais and SS, optional on others. IRS was introduced on the previous model Statesman like Boona said.

The underbody on the VP doesn't change between IRS and nonIRS models. However the IRS system is far more complicated than the standard live axle system.

There are sheet metal differences between IRS and non-IRS Commodores. Basically a box section and brackets for the diff. subframe. Nothing beyond a panel shop, or even a home builder with practical skills and a MIG, but it's not a straight bolt up.

well, bearing this in mind, is there anything else i have to change at same time, ie, different exhaust, hand brake cables, springs, shocks, fuel lines or even different brake calipers/rotors...

Springs, shocks and exhaust are different everything else is the same. Question tho, why would you bother adding it? There are no real benifits........

The money spent in buying and fitting IRS could be put towards all new bushes in nolathane along with new link pins and control arms, with some springs and shocks to get the same results........
Plus gettin rims to suit the VP IRS setup is a nightmare!

I have IRS on my Calais and i wonder what it does. I don't notice much difference, all i know is it doesn't do anywhere near as well as FE2, which was on my previous car.

Can someone give the proper definition of what it actually does?
