1: depends how far you've gone since it was last serviced. If it's almost due then yeah, I'd get it done. That said, even if you do get it serviced, there are a few basic things that you should carry. Engine drive belt, a couple of liters of oil, a couple of liters of water.

2:Tips on the drive? Music, lollies and a cute passenger. But then again, that can go for any drive right?

I'd just go the oil filters job there for the trip. Do the full check over and take off.

I would get it serviced. I get my car serviced atleast every 5,000km's or 3 months...whichever comes first.

i wouldnt think it would matter about gettin it serviced before your trip, maybe if you gettin bad economy...but if its running fine then dont worry about it..its only a lazy 1000k's (or so).
ive done the drive from the central coast (where im originally from) to just south of brissy and vice versa heaps of times....the best advice would be to drive during the day, take plenty of rest stops (even if its just to stretch your legs, it wakes you up a bit) and dont get drawn into hoofing past every car in sight as soon as the overtaking lane comes...even if that caravan has been pissing you off for the last 10ks, drive safe.

Its good to have it serviced before hand just in case there is any problem...in my opinion anyway. You cant always tell if there is a problem just by the way the car drives.

Put a note at the local backpackers, free ride south. You might get a cute passenger or two, might not but you have to take a chance sometimes

Just go offering chicks a free ride south.. Always works wonders..

If you're good enough, they might even let you go down south..

you two are classics, but highly considering foamys idea. though i will now have to really pack the boot good to leave backseat room. I'll always pick a hitcher if they make effort (sign of destination, dressed neatly, makes effort to be at outskirts of town to get a lift)

i have a mobile mechanic (family friend) here i only pay $100 thats for oil change, oil filter, fuel filter, check and top up all levels, spark plugs, and a full tyre and brake check and lets me know if there is anything else maybe wrong or needs replacing soon. so yeah ill get back to you when i get down there but ill get serviced before i leave just to be safe.
