Hello, I am seriously considering to do an auto to manual conversion. What type of tools do I need (hoist etc?) and what type of talents. Do I have to be a mechanic to be able to do it? Thanks
Or how much would someone here do it for. I live in Melbourne. Thanks
dont need anything special hoist to lift it out and a socket set and screwdrivers. then you need a lot of time, probably easier to buy a manual and sell yours unless you already have a wreck or gearbox already.
not even a hoist, did mine with car on stands and a trolley jack
buy my manual vn instead :P
Are you selling your manual VN? How much, or would you be interested in a swap, thats if you were being serious. ThanksOriginally Posted by geta
you can do it on stands or ramps. i prefer ramps. you should only need sockets and some screwdrivers. make sure you have everything you need before doing the conversion. make sure you have the right flywheel and dont forget to put a spigot bearing/bush in. the only other trouble you should have would be getting to the pedal box bolts in the engine bay and the bolt on the end of the steering column shaft. could be done in a day but allow 2 just in caseOriginally Posted by saint_matrix
i dont like ramps coz you cant get the car up them unless you have very long ones or some type of extension(a plank of wood) without scraping. on stands you just jack the fromt up and put them under.
Would any of you guys want to do it for a Auto transmission which has done less than or done 5,000kms since bought (reco'd) which is still under 40,000km warranty. You could prob sell that and make a fair bit. I live 15mins from Melbourne City, but can travel if more convenient.
if your willing to drive here then i get my tools my shed etc. na i kid i live 60 min from perth :P
I have done it before, but don't have time to help out
na i was kiding soz didnt think you would be willing. i would think it would be fairly easy if you have a gearbox and all the other stuff already getting it would be the hard bit. if all fails just remember how the auto goes back in.![]()
Its easy man, I did it myself in my garage with the front up on stands.
Get everything you need, i bought a kit off a random dude. I renewed the clutch, thrust bearing, spigot bush, clutch peddle spring, machined the flywheel and did the rear main at the same time..
The peddle box is awkward but not too bad.
Id highly recommend it, 5spd vn/vps are great to drive.
any more questions feel free to ask.
would you want to do it for me hahaha
yeah my autos on its way out as well, an auto to manual conversion seems the go, sometime soon! anyone want to help?![]()

Do you know how to do the conversion?
i changed mine to manual but dropped the box in with the motor
The pedal box is hell. takes ages.
You need a loom that plugs from the sensors threw the floor to the plug behind the console. than you dont need to worry about reverse lights and the switch that cuts power when in drive.
i may be wrong but if not you need to cut wires and earth them.
A 5 speed with a heavy clutch is way better than an auto.
it will even use less petrol if you dont go crazy (hard not to)
Have the bearings gown in my tail shaft?
When i release the clutch fully 0.5seconds later theres a rough scraping /grinding noise moreso under load or heavy take off.
it only does it in first and only sometimes.
Funny, a lot of people have done this conversion, but just wondering, a little bird told me that the VN series 1 is not an easy conversions due to the limitations of the Series 1 V6, from what i know, the S1 V6 has a different setup from a manual, and the conversion will cause hell.....
Not 100% sure on this as I have never attempted it (YET)
Just querind any one out there who really knows, and didnt just do it!!
(Plus I am pretty sure the ECU will have to be changed, than again, its only a hydrolic gearbox, but still the ECU would need changing to a Manual ECU)
I have done this conversion in my Series 1. There is a difference between series 1 auto and manual....apparently the crank shafts aren't the same in the way the flywheel bolts up. I avoided this by buying a engine, box, tailshaft (wasn't sure if it was different, got it just in case) pedal box, complete ECU and the small wiring loom that goes from the main loom to the gearbox (for reverse lights and speedo) all from a wrecked series 1 manual. The whole lot bolted up fine..zero dramas.
Changing the pedal box was a pain...drop the steering column, pull all the wiring out of the way so you can get to it..I had to die grind a hole through the firewall for the clutch cable...took half a day but no serious hassles.
Everything else was plug n play....Goodluck.

Is a 1990 VN a series 1 or 2?
late 90 (nov+)= series 2, early 90 = series 1
the easiest way to tell is the series ones have a different fuel rail system than the series 2. If you have a 1990 VN, than its most definately series 1. My plates say both 90 and 91, but its a series 1.
PS: Series 2 I am sure has the thermostat at the front of the engine whilst series 1 is at the back behind the throttle body, but like I said, just look at the fuel rails, if they are black , than series 1, if they are chrome/silver, than its a series 2.
the auto computer will work fine for the manual. TRUST ME.
i have done this auto to manual conversion. if there is anyone out there who doesn;t want to be stuffed around and wants the correct information first time get in touch with me. i went through hell trying to find out this info when i wanted to do this conversion. but now i know exactly what needs to be done. what parts you will need how it will go together etc. i will help you as much as i can to make it simple..... vn 5 speeds are a good thing to have due to the fact that they go very well they are 15 years old and they will still give most cars a hurry up, and they dro[p mad burnouts..hahah.
May I please have all your help haha. Im wanting to do the conversion myself so i can learn more about my car and because i can afford to pay someone else to do it. Thanks mateOriginally Posted by Reggie
