hey guys i just bought a vn off a dude and i snapped my fan belt today and on closer inspection when i boght a new one to put it on it was too big and i noticed that looking at the car from the front i think there is a pulley or cog missing from the bottom right corner at the front of the engine i was wondering what is meant to be there and whether its important im new to this forum so any help would be greatly appreciated thanks guys
im not real familiar with 5 litres of vn ss but does your ride have aircon. maybe u have got a belt to suit a model with aircon. Hope this gives you somethin to think about mate.
wtb: rockford fosgate sub rfp 3412
i forgot to mention this isnt for my ss its for a v6 3.8 sorry about that
edit. didn't see that ^^ post
you should have two belts one with the air cond compresser and an idler pully(idler pully on this belt is the at the bottom right right close th the engine looking from driver seat) the other should have the alternator, water pump and powered steering. i think you may be missing the idler pully.
it should have powered steering pump, alternator, water pump, belt tensioner and crank pully only thing at the bottom of the motor is the crank pully so i think it is fine. possibly the belt tensioner isnt tight enough maybe belt it to big.
does it matter if i dont have one will it affect the running of my car
na the first post was for a v8 the second one is a v6 you dont have anything missing.(if your not sure count the pullys there is 5) There could be a few things wrong if the belt is loose
1) the belt is the wrong size
2) belt tensioner is not working properley.
did the belt come off with your hands? if so it is likley your belt tensioner.
The V6 has just one drivebelt for the whole thing. Two different sizes, one for models with air-con and one for models without air-con.
Diagram attached.
Yes you do need the belt on to drive the thing. Otherwise no power steering, No alternator, No waterpump. That would be just asking for trouble if you were driving any longer than a few minutes.

well the dude at supercheap gave me a 2370 belt and it was way too big and then i exchanged it fo 1350 belt and was way to small. only reason i am changing it coz it was cold in the morning and i was drivin in a rush and next thing i know i got no fan belt and coolant pisin out of me car
oops forgot the aircond there should be 6 pullys but i'm sure you have all them. but if you want to find out count them. if you dont have aircond it is only 5 =P
spike could you fix the link please cheers
yea i dont have a aircon pulley but my car has aircon is that weird or not right sorry if im asking dumb questions i just dont want my car to break down on me
If you have air-con you must have an air-con compressor with a pulley on it. I don't think you can have air-con without one. I'm still not sure whether you have 5 or 6 pulleys. Any chance you can take a picture of the motor? We'll be able to work it out pretty quickly.

are you saying you have a a/c compressor and it isnt connected in drive belt but the air cond still works? if so that is wierd. on the other hand if the a/c compressor is there and you have the switch in the cab but it dosent work then no its not wierd.
did you try to put the first belt(the tight one) by hand? because it is to tight to put on by hand with out loosening the belt tensioner with a ring spanner.
i have the air con compresser but no pulley on it now i know wat the goe is but i just need to get the right size fanbelt now and it should all be sweet i hope. any chance you guys may know wat size i need so i dont have to flick through the 250 pag book at the shop??? cheers guys yous have been a great help
na soz dont know the size never had to change mine![]()
there will be two sizes listed in the book, anybody from bursons, repco, etc can look this up in 2 seconds flat
alright fellas got my new fan belt for my executive and im havin a hard time movin the tensionor and i dunno if im doin it right can anyone help me out adjusting the tensioner and how tight it should be??
Gday Dude Just Get a 18mm ring spanner and pull the thing anti clockwise and u will see it move and loosen the tension better if u have a mate ta hold the tension while u put the belt back on Cheers !!! Good luck
Once you have take a vn belt off and put it back on once you ever forget i can do it with my eyes closed now.Not that i'm bragging i had to change my aircon motor a couple of years ago it was about 7pm when i finnished putting it all back in but when it came to the belt it took me until about 10;30pm to work out exsactly the way the belt went on that being the shape of it going over all the pully's.Also one last question is there any better tensioner pulley betwen the metal one and the plastic one ? or are they both as good because i've found that the plastic one i have on makes a little bit of noise where as the metal one i used to have did'nt.
hey all i got my fan belt on and its all good thanks for ya help guys
