    Default air box

Ive searched befor i posted this but i couldn't find anything,
on the air box in my vn at the front of it, it has a like a little nosel that points to the front of the car if you remove that there is a big square in the actual air box, would these increase the performance of the car at all if more air is getting in there?
    thanks Wagonb0y

    Thanks for that
this another question sort of a personal opinion,
if you have a CAI if it was you would you bother with a pod filter or go with k&n pannel filter?
im aksing this in every ones personal opinion to what they would prefer?

Rip all the Airbox/piping rubbish and bolt a pod filter straight on to the throttle body (get a YellaTerra Big Bore TB). You will get this awesome sucking noise which sounds absolutely unreal, increased throttle response and a bit of a kick in the pants.

For definite cold air getting straight to the pod you will need to cut a hole in the bonnet. Try and fit a subtle scoop so the plod don't target you everytime.

Cold air rushing in from the top of the bonnet will also result in lower engine temperatures (slight to moderate).

If you do go this route its about $290 for the YT TB, $35 for the pod and a coupla hours on the spanners. May as well remove the plastic funnel in the manifold while you are at it. (VN s2 and onwards) Once done remember to check all your vacuum hoses. TWICE!!!

I got a CAI from a VS S/C & put that over my radiator. Goes great. Had to cut the corners off the mouth to let the bonnet clos tho. Im still thinking if I should put a pod into the air box (away from any heat). Also would recommend taking out the bellmouth at the same time.

How much did you cut off?, can you post a pic?. I have put the same on my VP Ute and the bonnet sits up on the drivers side.

Just remove your airbox if your interested in a Podfilter upgrade.. Put the filter onto the Pipe.. Then run a CAI pipe from a hole in your bumper directly onto the Podfilter Mouth..

More sleeper then a Bonnet scoop, Wont be as effective but more effective then an Air-Box if done properly..

Also Boxing your podfilter from the Engine side is good, so the pod is getting full cold air and not warmth of the engine.

air box??? whats that.?? havnt used one of them in a while
the ss intakes are only good to a certian point when they start restricting flow
personally i like a pod for the GREATER surface area and unrestricted flow, gives much better throttle responce
remember you can only flow as much as the smallest point on your air pipe and its all bottle knecked into the throttle body anyway,
but the surface area of the filter and how easy air passes through is vital, to be honost you can make your own "high flow" air filter with some foam and a old gutted air filter

It has been discussed many times in various threads but for a definitive answer - test.

A very simple set up to measure flow restriction of any part of an air intake in a qualitative way can be made using a water manometer made from c;ear plastic tubing and MDF and domestic vacuum cleaner.

there is more science to air intakes than some may think. if you're interested, find a book by John Robinson, Tuning Four Strokes or somehting like that. from memory he explains it.

basically a Pod will give max. airflow, but a well designed airbox can give excellent mid range response. it's not just about max. airflow but the acoustic response. this is why some cars (RX8?) have tuned length air intakes. putting a Pod on the end of your intake pipe is likely to spoil that.

look at a sportsbike. they have huge airboxes. i think the aim is to have a reservoir of air big enough to draw on if you twist the throttle, before the filter starts to restrict flow of fresh air.

Good point about the "reservoir". I've often thought that myself.

I kept the box, but a K&N filter, cut the box up and under the box, moved the washer bottle lower so the air from the wheel can enter the airbox, and got a 75mm TB, and the result:

    - It sound great, got a deep sucking noise
    - Not much power gains, just holds in gear longer when going up hill.

Downside:::airfilter getting dirty, and water may get in, waiting for a rainy day.

Here's a picture from my old mate SMR pod airbox master, yep that's a sealed box but I'm not sure where it breaths from front or underneath, there is just enough room beside the radiator and out the front to not be a restriction, runs 14.7 in a big fat Calais + exhaust
