    Bashing it??

Myn is pretty much the same, Heat works lighter works but controlling where the heat or cold goes doesn't light up. Or fan speed.

Its pretty common for the light bulbs to blow. Remember they've probably been in there for 15 years or so.

Some of them can be a prick to change, you'll have to remove the whole unit to replace the bulbs. Replace them all with new ones so you don't have to do it again.

If you're having to bash it to make it work, you need to change the bulb. Had this exact same problem, changed bulbs, all is good. They are tiny little wedge bulbs. Repco or someone like that usually stocks this stuff. L.E.D wedges are coming out now too, there's one I saw on Ebay T5 size, not sure if it fits though, could be a slightly bigger size, dunno.

I doubt is the fuse. Check all your lighting fuses first though. I would think the ciggy light/console light is on the same circuit.

MINI TUTORIAL (YES I'VE JUST DONE THIS, AND ITS A S**T OF A JOB!)

Problem is, replacing the globes isnt that easy in the heater switch. You need to take off the panel where your automatic or manual shifter is. To get the panel off, you'll need to put the auto is a lower gear, turn the panel sideways, maybe depress the button under the T-BAR and wiggle.

Once you've got that off and unclipped the wires to the ciggy lighter, you will see under the centre console panel a couple of screws (should be 3) Unscrew them and take panel off (I think you might take the aircon button off first, just PULL) After that panel is off, you will see more screws holding in the heater panel on your right. Remove them. Now, go to the driver's side. Crouch down and look at the BACK of the centre console (near driver's foot rest) you should see the end of a rod, and at the end of that rod, a whitle clip. Use a small flat bladed screwdriver to remove the clip.

Back at the front of the console, pull off heater and position knobs, then remove panel. Pull out white back part. You will see its held in by several electrical plugs. Unclip them. There is also a black vacum plug. Unplug it (it will make a gushing noise, but its OK) Now you have the unit out. Drive down to Repco or somewhere similar, show 'em the bulb, get new ones.

Put your hand at the back of the unit when replacing bulbs, to steady the bulb socket. Put control panel back in, redo all the electrical/vacum plugs CHECK AND SEE IF IT WORKS FIRST before you put the rest back together.

Reinstallation is the reverse of Deinstallation

I might add the lower of the stock bulbs is usually covered by a white cap. I replaced mine with a normal clear bulb, and it looked better and brighter after this!
