Default how to shave an paint a dash

hey guys im not sure if this has been done here befor but i thought i would list what i have done to shave out my ash tray an ciggaret lighter an the line around the shifter in my VN auto,

1, i sanded everything with wet an dry the whole lot because it is going to have to be apinted,
2,get the car putty ready, this is the first time i had used putty an was a bit weird but i did some practice runs on bits of old wood first
3, i then applied it all around the line or "groove" around the shifter an ash tray an ciggaret lighter, i built it up so i can sand done latter with a more harsh one at first then a smooth one when im almost done sanding
4, then i to fill in the ash tray i applied a larger amount over the whole area an smoothed out with a little grout tool for tilling,
5, i then did the same thing to ciggaret lighter,
6, i should have done this bit first, i used a ruler to cover up the whole where the ash tray was an ciggaret lighter im sure you could use any other sorta of hard plastic to do this then i glued it in with araldite(sorry carn't spell) you could use any other sort of plastic i guess but since this was my first time doing this sort of stuff i tested all the bits of plastic with the putty an the primer i will be using just to see if it will eat it or not i guess it pays to check incase you start an it eats everything,
i will post more later today an pictures tomorrow,
i hope this has helped some people an have some fun like im doing with it

    ahh thats sound good,
ive almost got there in sanding it back, an i used a bit of a more course sanding paper to start of with, an it had taken a few chunks out of the bog, so lucky ive got this spray bog that my brother had used on he's truck an it works great for little holes like that so i will use that this afternoon to make it so it's all smooth like a babies bum, because a little hole like that would drive me up the wall cause i know it is there

im in the process of doing all mine. Im doing around the handbrake, the gearshift the same as your talking with the ash try and cig lighter then im putting a heap of buttons there and lights and stuff. Ill put some pics up when im doing. I also did the stero seround much like airstrike did but i have put my 2 inch gauges into the bottom setion of it and i MIGHT have to change it again when i get a dvd screen. I also took the lines out of the aircon bit.. the lines above and below the speed selecter. Im also doing them white cause my car is white. Its coming along quite nicely gotta get stuck into finishing it tomorrow though i need my car back together

Thats how my stage 2 is. I did it like that orginally but some of the bog cracked so I did it fairly standard just painted for now.

mine is sorta painted. well the radio surround is done. A couple of runs but tahts what happens when you use a dodgey supercheap special spray gun. thankfully there are in places that will be hiden away. The centre conso pieces have to be sanded back again. Stupid pos. And the aircon bit i stuffed up. So anyway i gotta get it all done this weekend hopefully. Get my licence back on friday or something. I was hoping to get it all done by then but i wont. anyways ill post a pic of mine undercoated. like my head unit..

im just doing it as if i was painting a car. I basically sanded, bogged, gued some timber on bogged some more. sanded some more shapped with a grinder and file and stuff. Then did a final bog snded back, spray bog and double check it was all smooth had to do a small touch up with bog. then undercoated with normal car undercoat wet and dryed back with 600 then 1200 then lots of coats of white car acrylic. I gotta sand it back with 1200grit wet and dry then get a holden sticker to stick on it then LOTS of coats of clear. Im think about 10... That way it will never scratch.... he he he

wont using bog on the shifter surround cause it to crack if it ever gets removed later as you have to flex it and why hasnt any1 tried a flake or metalic paint instead of plain colours
im not admiring your car im looking in disgust

Why hasnt anyone tried a flake or metallic............cost. As it is, its not the cheapest thing to do once you add up the sandpaper, bog, applicator, plastic primer, white primer, top coat colour, top coat clear, masking tape, etc ,etc.

undercoat of what? as far as the dash goes, the paint has stuck, as for the doors haha thats a different story.. using black VHT on the doors worked well, using white on the doors was a mistake. everyday i find a new flaky spot, i used alot of K&H white vynil PAINT on the doors and it flaked, im going to sand bak or peel what i can and paint them with the VHT vynal dye which was my original plan but autobarn ran out ov it so my impatience forced me onto the K&H.. on plastic like the window pillars and glove box the K&H works fine, on vynal stick to dye.. black works well on everything i just think that the white isnt very good
