technically the ecotec was bought out in the vs...although some people have the opinion that the last couple of vr's off the production line had ecotecs fitted (i have seen no proof to this though).
as for whether its the same as your S2 engine in your vn...no, not exactly...visually it would be almost identical but there are differences such as the vr having a higher compression.

As with every model the engine had refinements made to them.
What exactly they r Im not sure, but I do notice that the VR engines r usually alot quiter than earlier models.

the VR commodores have six pack coils, the windscreen washer bottle is next to the air box, the alternator has a cover over the front of it and a few other visual things that i cant remember at the moment.

all series 2 motore have a 3 pack coil (2 coils per pack) alot of vrs didnt jhave the cover ont he alternator, i mean mine does (VN s2) but i would bet my moeny its a replacement unit from a vt etc. but yeah basically same motor, like mentioned alot of people reckont he vr s2 berlina or sum shit had the ecotec but from what i know ecotec started at vs, and the VR motor is intercahngable between series 2's vp's and vr's. (series 1 vn's had a 6 bolt crank/flywheel, s2 had 8)

One other difference is the oil sip stick was at the front of the engine. And the Air box had a little peace that seem to grab more air next to the driving lamps. Maybe a new Oxygen sensor to a 4 wire i think?.
But my mates VR Berlina is a loud bugger much louder then my VP it's got a sports but you here the engine first.
VR's are maybe down lower in Revs better for smoothness but thats about it.

True that is why I'm going the ecotec engine in my VP with it's tranny to see how much the engine really got let down by the Electronic auto's.
The Ecotec is the best engine before the Alloytechs but was held back by silly tunes and a auto that held take offs.

But i have VY V6 badges on the side and when the ecotec goes in i can claim it to be a VY engine, If you know what I'm saying not saying your mate lied he might have bought it off someone that done it.
But admittingly i have seen some IRS systems in VP's not many so it might be just like that 5-10 over the country?.

vp calais and 91 ^ vq statesman were released with irs.

holden have always released future features in early models. from rts in hx's to vb commy interior in hz's. there was a few vn's floating around with a factory fitted rb30. till they decided to go the v6 route.
there may have been a few vr's fitted with ecotecs but they would be test mules and not a public release.

vr has a extra sensor at the front or the engine

I think i believe you because it makes sense, They stick a couple in a have them go over the car for all the serves things and that and see how they preformed in real day to day driving. They can test as much as they want to but we drive them everyday.
