Hey, I got a phone call this morning from ASV (Adelaide Special Vehicles) who have had my car for a week now. They attempted taking the exterior door trim off the guards and had alot of trouble, with some paint being taken off the guards (i have new guards going on anyway so this doesnt matter).
But they rang and said if the same happens with the rest of the trim, it will cost me an extra $150 per door because they will have to repaint the doors! So obviously I said leave the door trim on.
So how do I go about taking it off myself? Its the Calais/Berlina style trim and it has that big thick black scholastic stuff that sticks it to the doors. I know people have used fishing line to take the door trim off which I will use as well unless anyone has a better way?
But the main issue is removing the black glue/scholastic stuff... I do not want to use petrol or anything corrosive on the doors that could harm the paint.
Any help would be awesome guys cause I dont want to be driving around with the door trim only on the doors, not the guards...and it looks out of place with a kit anyway!
p.s. they also offered to service my car for $50 while its up on the hoist, filters, oil etc...Better leaving it to my mechanic or let ASV do it?
i used a hair dryer to take my badges off. heat the badge and slowly peel it off. be careful though it can get really hot. leave the car in the sun before doing this that way it doesn't take long to heat the glue. for $50 i would get them to do it. that is very cheap.
sounds like sikaflex (spelling?) strikes again!!
what i did was peal them off slowly, then attacked it with a caramel wheel. But do it slowly and take your time or you will burn the paint.
Hmm cheers for the advice. Why did holden have to use something so friggin difficult to remove.
Does $150 a door sound like a normal figure if they have to repaint the doors if the paint is taken off with the door trim?

i had one fall off actuallyhad to pick one up from the wreckers (didnt wreck the paint with full force)
ummm hair dryer with work the best..... use dental floss, its much stronger and thinner...!!!!!
You mean a badge? Or the exterior door trim?Originally Posted by PaRaDoX616
p.s. Cheers for the dental floss idea man. Will use that instead of fishing line![]()
Also, In the VR/VS section alot of guys said eucalyptus oil is good to use.
Will leaving eucalyptus oil and letting it soak into the paint have any effect on the paint?
I had to remove the exterior door trims before i had it repainted. Holden put way too much urethane/sikaflex on the back, with that much it isn't going anywhere.
The paintshop recommended that i get a paint scraper and sharpen up the edge and round off the corners so it doesn't scratch the paint. Then put it in behind the trim strip and tap it along with a rubber mallet.
This worked for me. It does leave a bit of urethane behind on the paint. This can be removed with a bit of eucalyptus or spirits and a lot of patience.
I tried fishing line and wire, they dont work on the wide strips, theres too much urethane to get through.

So you didnt end up scratching the paint with the paint scraper? As long as the corners are rounded off yeah?
im 16 and i thought i was having trouble dam, i came on here to find answers to help me, but it looks like ill have to help you guys lol, i have a wagon so there is about a 17cm strip and the front then the front door then the rear door and then a hell small piece on the rear guard, at first i just pulled the two small ones off, leavered them up with a knife and pulled them off, then i just cleaned the dirt and shit up with terps and just kept rubbing really really ###n hard to get that black plastic shit off, took ages, so then i started on the back door, i just leavered it up with a knife and tore it off lol, makes a hell funny sound aswell, sounds like you are pulling it off and all suction caps are letting go, but yeah it shouldnt pull the paint off, i just cleaned it up with terps and used my fingernaid to get the dirt off and the top black strips come off easy but the middle strip is really hard, you just gotta keep rubbing and rubbing aye, it does eventually work! i would post pics on here but i dont know how lol any1 wanna help me? add me ashleyweston_40@hotmail.com or just add me and ill send you pics... thanks and i hope this helped!
Yeah on my car the fishing line didnt work at all, dental floss was crap for the Berlina trim also...
Jug of boiled hot water over the trim, then a paint scraper will push through the top half then another jug of hot water into the trim and the bottom half will pull away...
Removing the left over sikaflex off the doors is just incredibly hard though. Eucalyptus oil or turps and it takes a loooooong time.
haha good to see im not alone on this problem! i posted askin for help with this not long ago, so yeh just ignore it coz i didnt see this post until just now, i took the trim off along with a lil bit of paint here n there but i still got all the glue left so i gonna have to use the eucalyptus oil idea.
Didnt work for me. To get what was left I just had it sanded off and had my doors repainted![]()
prepsol works but you ahve to be careful not to leave it on the paint for too long cos it does eat away at the paint eventually
Use metho... works better than turps, white spirits, orange power (goo remover), prepsol. You still have to rub for a long time but I found its half as long using metho. I did one side of my VR (thin strip) in a few hours. Tried all the products above and metho was the go. Also a heat gun helps when your peeling the strip off coz it lifts up the double sided tape with it, that means one less thing to rub off!
Hope that helps.
P.S. Penuts.. Prepsol is just a wax and grease remover and wont do **** to the paint...
if you get sick of trying to get the sikaflex off you could just do what im planning to do once i get around to it (ive already bought the trims, just need them sprayed). im going to roughly clean up all the sikaflex with sandpaper, doesnt matter if i scratch the paint, then put some VS calais door trims on which will be colour matched to the rest of the car.
the calais trim is wider and takes up the whole indentation on the door and its also flat so it doesnt stick out like the normal trim, i actually like the look better than having no trim at all there (personaly choice i spose).
but have a look at VS calais and statesmans if you wondering what im on about - always a back up plan if you completely screw up the paint on your door trying to remove sikaflex.
Quagmire: My fellow Americans, I have not been entirely truthful with you. I did gagoogidy that girl. I gashmoygadied her gaflavity with my googus. And I am sorry.
ok, mine just sorta fell off, but i guess thats my luck. next stupid question is, i went and got a tube of urethane from crash repairers and he told me (for Calais strips) to use urethane in the center, with two strips of double sided tape to hold it til the glue dried.
that was fine til the glue started lifting again, and the tape does **** all. will reheating the glue and taping it down til it grabs, work? (by glue i refer to urethane)
either that or i'l get them to professionally do it.
my prob is that every time i open the driver's door, it clips on the front guard and bends outward. one day i reckon i'll snap it.
any ideas guys?

The VZ is here! About time!
Has anyone succesfully managed to get these damn things off without damaging the paint work? I just skipped past everything and hit it with the heat gun + paint scraper
Did a nice number on the paint work but since I'm planning on repainting doesn't matter![]()
Man, ive removed 3 sets of badges and I've tried to use dental floss but the heat from the hair dryer just kept making the floss snap, even when doubled over. I then used thin fishing line which also snapped with the heat. I had to resort to some thick fishing line.
Badges are quite different to door trim though... Badges are held on by double sided tape stuff, not sikaflex.
Yeah.. my door badges pretty much fell off with a little heat from the heat gun. Just levered one side up a tad and then grabbed hold with pliers and they came right off no worrys.
The door trims though... I ended up with badly damaged paint :S
Just wondering if anyone ended getting em off without damaging the paint as I know a few other people interested in doing it who can't get a repaint for the price of paint![]()
I see this thread was started months ago. what ended up happening? Agree on the Eucalyptus oil thing, i used it with my VL and worked a treat.
