unfourntually... the rear main seal is..... impossible to remove while the engine is in the car....

i forget if you can remove the tranny to get to it but yeah its a pain in the ass, if i were u id find someone with a block n tackle and do it your self.. otherwise your out of pocket ALOT of money

It's a whore of a job...straight up. You either have to take the gearbox out and swear and curse and try to do it under the car, or you take the engine out of the car to do it. It's a job that manages to suck and blow at the same time.

Try a thicker oil first though. Something like Penrite HPR 30 should slow the leak, it's a thicker oil so it takes longer for it to leak through. When the leak gets bad enough with HPR 30 yank the motor and do a full rebuild on the sucker.

on the series 2 they redesigned the rear main seal so it can be removed while the engine is still in the car, as the buick 3800 was originally a east-west mounted engine in the US and they pretty much dumped it in the vn without much modifications... thats why the exhust headers arnt the best flowing, it was pretty much rushed.... and being the first v6 in the commodore range didnt help either....

hahahah ur getting ripped off, i got mine replaced when the mechs had my car for a week...but they had to take it out to do some other stuff...so yer seal is cheap buy it from super cheap or repco for like $5 or something man, then just ask around for prices until u find something cheap...keep in mind the engine has to be pulled out so yer its a big job, not a little easy one, but still i hot all my labor done for $881 ... so yeah

My vn has had a rear main seal leak for like 11 years, and it only leaks a drop here or there.Changing your oil every 4000km's will help and also try a bottle of Nulon oil stop leak.

All vn's leak from the rear main seal and especially if your harmonic balancer is stuffed so make sure to get that replaced as well.

If you do all of the above it will help.

Also you didnt say if its leaking alot or just a little dribble of oil,as a little drop here and there is nothing to worry about.

Yep i got a quote for $600 was the cheapest, so i got them to do a few other things while they were at it nearly a full rebuild. Let me know if u need a full gasket/seal set as i have an ACL set for S1 motor spare.

    Cheers
    Chris
