harmonic balancer

hey all i have to replace my harmonic but when i try to undo the bolt the otor keeps turning

an i suppose to jam somthing behind it to stop it from moving

or is there another way

u use a breaker bar from underneath the car , and turn it over to loosen the bolt

also i have reading up on this and noticed that peoples harmonic that has been stuffed is thet it rattles when its in idle

my car is making noise under load about 60 ks wheni can here it not at idle
could this still be the harmonic??? also mine has a fine crack around the inside bit of the rubber i f u know what i mean

i also hav a medium crack forming.. im not sure whether to get it replaced or wait for it to packup? id get someone with a rattle gun to undo that bitch of a bolt tho

fairly common problem on the buicks... dont expect much change out of $400 i think thats what there worth now...

yeah i got my car serviced on thursday . i need to replace my one as well. they wanna charge 250 for it. does any one know a place to get a new one. ill do it my self

if you need a cheap fix, you can always look at the wreckers for a near new one , they last round 200,000k's, plenty of vn's at wreckers.. but weather u can get it off is another thing... lol u can get a VN S1 or S2 engine for $50-120....harmonic balancer wouldnt cost stuff all, just look for one in good cond, shouldnt be too hard, or buy a new one if you have the dosh

has anyone developed an aftermarket one yet that lasts longer?

Just did mine too. Got a new cheap one from repco. when undoing the nut if its a manual put it in first. Romac performance products make a good aftermarket one avaliable in steel and alloy

there is usually visual evidence of damage when the balancer is toast.

if by "fine crack" you mean just normal surface ageing of the rubber then that's not a problem. post a photo if you're unsure.
