I've been wondering about a power steering cooler for a while now. Just reading the August 06 Street Commodores magazine I spotted an article on the cooling system seen on www.ls1turbo.com.au. I was wondering if anyone has used this core in their VN/VP, and if so where did you mount it ??
The high-flow core is apparently heaps better than the usual power steering cooler setups available, putting far less pressure on the pump. If I can fit this core to my VN somehow, I'm all for it! But I don't want to spend $350 on the core only to find that it doesn't fit!!
What power steering coolers are you guys running on your cars? How are they - any noticable difference?? I'm also interested in an extra transmission cooler . . .
Any info appreciated.
Cheers

to tell you the truth ive never even heard of a power steering cooler, but what possible situation would you be driving and cornering so hard and fast that your warm up your power steering fluid to a point where it needs to be cooled???
but if your really keen, you could probally just tab into the plastic resivoir, run a few fittings, then run some hose into a normal tranny cooler, little one you know,
They do exist - designed for race applications, but I'm seriously thinking about putting one on just for the sake of improving the system. I'm planning on keeping my VN around for a *very* long time . . .
$350 sounds very expensive for a power steering cooler...and I really dont think they would be necessary?
As for the trans cooler...theres a group buy in the General section of the modificaton area but thats going nowhere.
Do you take the VN curcuit racing? No? Then dont bother. They wont improve the system at all, and driving to work and back doesnt require one.Originally Posted by savage1987

OK I won't bother then
I don't drive to work though - it's a *fun* weekend car at the moment.
Thanks for the input guys. You helped me not to waste a lot of money. Part of the reason I was thinking about this is that I managed to heat up my entire engine to the point of blowing the radiator, and I've got a power steering leak which I've put down to my love of the occaisional bit of spirited cornering ....

HOW THA HELL DO YOU DO THAT!! Do you look at the temp gauge at all??Originally Posted by savage1987
The leak isnt to do with the spirited cornering. Its just wear and tear. It will just be a split hi pressure hose, just replace it.
Unless you are drifting, curcuit racing, hill climbing, etc dont bother.

Donuts. Yes I was looking at the gauge - it never quite made the red zone. What I failed to realise was that the radiator was in fact still the original one . . .Originally Posted by AirStrike
Oh no it isn't a split high pressure hose. Used to think it was my cracked reservoir cap because it'd squirt fluid onto the bonnet . . . Replaced this with a new one from Holden. It still leaks. Badly. Looking around it seems to be partially from the pump itself, and there's also fluid around the gear/rack etc under the car.Originally Posted by AirStrike
So it would seem that I have a bit of work to do . . . such is life with an old car I guess.
Buy yourself a proper Water Temperature gauge/Oil Temperature, anything around 100deg's and pull the fk over![]()

If you're doing circle work like that and the temp gauges max out, I wouldn't be pulling over, I'd drop it into 5th and cruise for as long as possible at about 80kph just to keep the air moving around it. Cool it down a bit quicker.
Gravity is proof that nature keeps getting us down.
That's exactly what I did, after a brief look under the bonnet to make sure there was nothing really wrong. Radiator consistently leaked for a few days so I replaced it. Problem solved.
