Default PEDDERS Suspension $2153 quote for my VN

I took my car to Pedders in Sydney south and got their $14 safety check
    and i got quoted $2153 ...

    Front : 2 new shocks $268
    Upper Bushes $70
    worn lowerbushes upperbearing plates $150
    Steering Gear/rack $420

    Rear: 2 new shocks $160
    upper bushes $110
    lower bushes $180
    lateral arms $30
    ---------------------------------------------------------
    Parts: $1388
    Labour $695
    WA $55
    Balance $15
    -------
    equals $2153
    -------

I am taking car to a mechanic i know and im getting everything fixed except for the steering rack as its still got life in it.What would be fair price ??

$900 is what my mechanic said he would do it all for.. and also replace the cooling temp sensor.

Is replacing the steering rack a very expensive job ??? whats a fair price for that ??

    Any thoughts.......

The Shocks is a good comparison. Pedders are asking heaps for shock absorbers in their quote, and i think the labour is too high.
But theres other things there that are well priced at the same time.

The passenger side front spring is stuffed and thats it... other side was replaced years ago after accident.

Im getting everything done all round ... shocks and springs... just to be on safer side... and getting what bushes need replacing urgently...

yeah my mechanic said around $800-$900

but im not doing the steering rack yet. thats for another day..

Im not going to get it lowered or anything ive decided against it as i prefer a comfortable ride.

does $900 seem fair to replace all thats listed except the steering rack..?

All them prices are straight off a Dealer on ebay & Autobarn for the Panhard rod..

Dont go to Pedders all them parts they have listed probarbly dont need changing..
Heres a story, i went in saying my front end is making alot of noise when driving and slowing down... They said my steering rack and a hell lot of other parts were worn out causing amounts of sound..

So i went for a 2nd opinion at a Beurepair..
The man said 'These are a high performance tyre and shouldnt be used at the front of the car'
He swaped my front to back.. And to this day i go back to that man for new tires..

Every car that i have taken to Pedders for a safety check, ends up with them wanting to replace everything.

A second opinion is a good idea, but dont just dismiss what Pedders have said needs replacing. If it needs to be replaced, then do it.

$900 sounds like a great price for all those things + labour (minus the steering rack). I'd jump at the price.

pffft pedders are the biggest rip off. they were gonna charge me between 400 and 500 just to fit ultra lows spings and shortend shocks in the rear. I ended up doing it myself 200-300 and it was piss easy to do. I just wish i could say the same about the front.

I went to Pedders so i could get a list of things that they said needed fixing then get my mechanic to check over and repair if necessary.I couldnt believe my ears when Pedders said $2200 otherwise I would have let them repair.

I guess I have to thank my local council and its totally farked roads with potholes that have stuffed my suspension..

@Vn2nv the cars mainly been looked after by me,the suspension is from the factory still .. bar one front shock which was damaged & replaced in accident years ago.

so I expected I needed new shocks/springs but $2200 the cars been treated like a baby since it rolled out the factory.

heres photos of my beast... its got original engine, gearbox, diff etc .. doesnt use any oil or blow any smoke.. change oil every 4000km's got 185,000km's on it,2.5 inch exhaust, had 2 pak respray. etc.

Ok. Pedders are wankers, but they do a good job. They always mention the power steering when you get a check done by them.

When they did my alignment, the guy said my rack was leaking (haha) and some other power steering problems. I called bullshit and told him that was crap and my system was fine. He just shrugged and said ok, well if you ever want to get it done..

I had my PS fluid flushed my Holden a few months on, part of Holdens job is to check the whole system and I told them to check it well. The guy said my system was perfect.

Other people who have gone to Pedders have reported this bullshit about PS systems needing fixing.. Probably a bit like the "mechanics brakes"

    thats steep,

the dealer off ebay is in hallam, i got my springs for $95 a pair
online performance auto's, trevor i think really nice blokes to deal with, they have a shop front too... in that nice big industrial estate i bet hozy has some fun in

yeah heres how to check if your shocks need doing
push on each corner of the car, if it bounces at all they need doing, if it springs back to place and dosnt bounce its good...

you DONT need your steering rack done, i got told i needed mine done by a mechanic 2 weeks after i had it replaced elsewhere

ace do good jobs and for cheap.. they sell kings for like $140 a pair which is pretty good $95 was a special deal thanks to the group buy...

i havnt been to a mechanic this year, good learning experiance, the internet is there to learn.. you'll save money... lots of it

$2200 is stupid, bearing plates cost $100 but probbly wont need doing, to check them have a look and see if they're popped (sitting high) if they are then change them for $150 you'd want ajustable notherlane ones
as for bushes, id check them all out yourself, check for cracks...

a new set of bushes wouldnt go a-stray

I emailed Footscray Pedders about lowered springs and Pedders shocks rear. Well over $1000. Just the springs fitted $590.
Go to the tyre factory (Spent 7hours there) Got 4 kings springs fitted and free alignment for $380. Bought Monroe GT Shorten Gas shocks of ebay $130 fitted free my brother.
4 Springs 2 Shorten Shocks Rear $510 Cheaper then Pedders still.

You shouldnt say that man. You havent seen the steering rack... The steering rack still has some life in it according to the mechanic, but its obviously on its way out and will need replacing at some stage. Just because someone told you that your steering rack needed replacing when it didnt doesnt mean its the same in every case... Sure it might happen alot, but sometimes it really does need replacing so dont just dismiss it as nothing, check it.

Its a good learning experience to fix things yourself... But you dont always know when something needs replacing. I always get my car professionally serviced...not because I dont know how to do it myself because I obviously do, but because its good to have the car up on a hoist and properly checked over by a professional. If my mechanic notices something I then check it myself and replace it myself if I can... Thats how I do it anyway

Yep, sounds similar to me. The VP has done 170000ks', and I noticed the steering was all over the place. Haven't driven it much since getting the company car. Took it to Peddars at Browns Plains in Brissie, $14 check. I knew something was wrong with the clunking in the front end, weaving over the road etc---

    2 x Comfort Gas shocks $268.00
    2 x Ball Joints $110.00
Left and Right Bearing Plate $148.00
Power Steering rack and pinion $420.00
    2 x 5823 Peddars bushes $66.00
    2 x 5843 Peddars bushes $38.00
    2 x Comm sway bar bushes $32.00
    2 x front bump stop & boot kits $90.00
    2 x 5808 Peddars bushes $56.00
    2 x 5809 Peddars bushes $60.00
set of Bendix front brake pads $75.00
    Fitting and labour $425.00
    Wheel align $55.00
    Full suspension check 0.00

    Grand Total $1843.00

Said yep, do it all. They said some of the components looked original, so they must have been pretty stuffed. Drove out of Peddars, round the corner to Bob Jane and threw $600.00 worth of Maxxis tyres on it, drives like its on rails now, very nice.

Considering I've spent bugger all on this car since buying it 5 years ago, to get the front end back to A1 condition, price was worth it.

Indeed. I vouch for this guy in Hallam. I've given him a lot of my cash and have not been disappointed. Does a good job, does this guy..

lol, this is like some kind of deja vu...i made the mistake not long after i bought my vs of taking it to pedders.
i knew the suspension was pretty f*cked but i was busy with other parts of the car when i took it in to get an adjustable panhard rod from them...just buy one, not get them to fit it...but the bloke said they could chuck it on for an extra $20, so what the hell, i let them do it.
i came back and they'd also done a "free" suspension check and it had almost $2500 worth of stuff to fix, lol.
one of the things on the list was a new p/s pump...which i found very funny, seeing as it was brand new as of three days earlier.
when i told the bloke that, he tryed to crap on about "p/s fluid being found around the pump" and "maybe it wasnt cleaned off when the new pump was put in"....whatever.
anyway, i ended up doing all my bushes and shocks later...i bought the parts and had my mechanic do the labour..cost me $700, using the same nolathane parts and better shocks than quoted by pedders.
i made the point of stopping off at pedders after picking up my car from my mechanics and told them i just did everything (and a few more bits) they had quoted almost $2500 for, for $700.
the bloke wasnt too impressed...especially seeing as there were customers in the store, when i was expressing this (quite loudly).

**i should note that i got all my suspension components at wholesale cost, but that does not make up a $1800 difference between the pedders quote and what it cost me**
