i have a very similar problem,
my car earlier today was running rough.
i cant even really accelelerate because it shakes so much and backfires like its out of tune.
could this be the coil pack or harmonic balancer?
    im hoping its not internal

its sweet when im not on the throttle but when i put load on the engine it starts backfiring and is slow as.

Alot of peoples dfi packs have been stuffing up over the winter due to getting damp and crusty so check that, no ones busted a crank sensor since the summer though ??

if the dfi pack was out could it cause loss of accelearation majorly like backfiring, but be not as bad with no load.
and could it cause the idle to sound like a lawnmower from the exhaust?
