Default What temp should my VP run at?

    Hey,
My VP's temp will sit at about 1/4 of the gauge when travelling along, but when stopped or moving very slowly, the temp will rise to half before the thermo fans kick in. Should the temp always rise to half...or should it sit a bit above 1/4 even when stopped or at lights etc?

Mine never sits at half... always around a quarter.

Make sure you use the good coolant not the cheap stuff in the VN/VP's. It has to be atleast to holden specs for the VN onwards and I personally use complete concentrate, no water.

Other than that its probably just your thermostat or something... Check the coolant level is ok in the overflow bottle then check under your radiator cap to make sure the coolant is up to the cap underneath, if its not you have a blockage in your radiator/cooling system somewhere.

I think thats pretty normal, when I stop or in traffic it goes to half way, fan kicks in and drops it back. Mines a VR but its pretty much the same as the VN engine.

Mine runs cooler with the a/c on (due to the thermo fan always being on with the a/c):P

Mine never gets passed half, and usually sits above 1/4 when driving and moves up to just under halfway when stopped....

I used the holden coolant when i fixed my thermostat

ok i think there is definently sumthing wrong with mine then if everyones sits on about a quarter or less, mine would only sit on that if it has been idling for 5 mins or less. i dont know what it could possibly be though, just this year i replaced both head gaskets and inlet manifold gaskets cos the block was blocked and it stopped the overheating problem... should i be running a colder thermostat or should the fan be kicking in earlier then at about 3/4s, if so how do i do that??

Maybe you need to bleed your cooling system, I had the same problem and it worked for me.

a vn thermostat opens at 96c(about the second line or half way between) so anything at or below that is fine and if it dosent get to that maybe it isnt closeing.(i think there might be a 105c version as well?)

Yeah, I have reversed flushed my radiator. Thermo fans work fine with the AC on. Fan seems to kick in a notch over half on the temp gauge. Thermostat was replaced about a year ago...would it need replacing again? Or maybe it was replaced with a dodgy one in the first place....but it was replaced with a new one from Holden dealership....u'd think it should be working fine?
Only other thing I can think of is that the radiator is blocked. Any ideas on how much it would cost to had the radiator inspected/cleaned? I have bled the system to make sure there is no air. When I lift the radiator cap, the coolant is right up to the top, no air bubbles and green in colour. Radiator overflow bottle has plenty of water/coolant in it...

check the Coolant temp. sensor (ECU)? mine had a similar problem and replace that sensor and it was back to normal. The part is $14 genuine.

Mine runs at about 1/5 - 1/4, kicks up to just under half if I'm idling in traffic and the fan kicks in, drops it back to 1/4.

It used to run at 1/2 and idle at lights at 8/10 until I had the thermostat and radiator done.

hmmmmmmmmmmmm....definatley think there is sumthing wrong with mine then. Will replace thermostat again, and get the radiator checked. I dont like the idea of my temp going past half, as it is tending to do now. When idling in traffic, it will shoot up to over half within 3 mins. I'm starting to think there must be a blockage of some sort or something, but i dont know....time will tell

i run a 180 degrees thermostat and the temp gauge sits just above the bottom line when driving but it gets up to about 1/2 where the fan kicks in which drops it back to about 1/4. when idling and stuck in traffic. i've read that you should run a cooler thermostat to make power but a hotter thermostat for economy. mine seems to take an age to actually warm up but i suspect it probably a dicky sensor unit??? it's also due a flush and new coolant also for which i use prestone, GM spec????

edit: for total peace of mind i would recomend getting an aftermarket temp gauge that has actual graduated temperature markings so youcan see the actual temp of the engine.

ummm no Maybe you should try reading the bottle one day buddy. It will tell you that maximum results come with 100% concentrate...However it can be mixed.
