Hi guys,
I am about to wreck 2 VN station wagons one is white (as in my avatar) and the other is blue, the white one's body is not to bad, so stay tuned here for parts I will sell really cheap to just commodore users.
my question...
One of the cars is a V8 with 4sp auto and the other is the standard V6 manual.
Can I use the manual box from the V6 and bolt it onto the V8. If I can do this what computer would I need require and would I need to change the crankshaft on the 8 to suit the shaft of the gearbox.
Any help in this area would be great.
Like I said earlier stay tuned for parts for sale of the wagons. I am not selling anything mechanical at this stage.

Theres a thread on the same question somewhere in the tech section. The only difference that anyone has been able to think of is that the two boxes have a different input shaft, apparently the V6 input shaft is longer than for the V8. Apparently the V6 part can be machined to the correct dimensions for an 8 but I don't know for sure. If i recall correctly in the VN the only real difference between the auto and manual memcals is a slightly different idle setup, so the V8 auto memcal should be able to handle the manual box if you can get it to fit.

What pandaman said sounds about right.. make sure the bell housing (lutch housing, whatever people what to call it this week) is correct. If it is not, I would recommend either getting a specialist to fit it to the V8 or buy the correct bell housing. Just remember if you do it yourself and make adaptor plates to suit, and the input shaft is not lined up just right that it may brake.
I have also heard that some of the gear ratios in the origional V8 ones are differet to the V6. This is only hear-say at this stage, so don't take this as gospal.
My Mrs Uncle has a VP SS Manual (a rare beast over here), and I must say it's one of the nicer V8's I've ever driven.. so I think you're on the right track there.
Good luck with the changeover
Whoops forgot about the bellhousing, I'm pretty sure you're right, that would be different as well.Originally Posted by RobMooar

The ratios are a bit different.
Gravity is proof that nature keeps getting us down.
V6 Box wouldnt last 2 long behind a V8
The boxes are the same except for the input shaft and the ratios![]()
