re- refilling VN air conditioning

Has anyone heard of this before? I wanted to get my air conditionung tank thing filled as it has no refridgerant stuff in it, or is low, so ive been told, as i thought it wasnt as cool as it should be, but i was also told that i would have to go so a specialist and spend a coupla hundred on getting the fittings chaged over first cos since the 1990's theyve changed to eco friendly fittings...on the actual tank thingy...does this seem right?

That is correct, The refrigerant gas used in vehicles before the mid 90's is R12 which is a CFC Gas, bad for the environment, etc. You can't get R12 gas systems recharged, not legally anyway.

Modern vehicles use R134A gas, CFC free. This gas is not compatible with R12 systems. Therefore some components of the aircon system need to be replaced proir to regassing the system.

Might vary from state to state but here in SA you can still get R12 recharges.
There is an aircon guy at Smithfield that has stocks of R12 and he got the aircon in my old '83 hilux working. Im spewing because Iv'e shelled out to have 3 cars converted in the last few years, at $600, each not knowing there was still some R12 around.

when you get the a/c system converted or retrofited the following things have to be replaced:
all the o-rings in the system
some of the rubber hoses
all of the fittings for filling
the reciver dryer and any thing that is leaking

as the r134a gas reacts with some of the rubber in the system
