roof rack on vn

hey all
i'm proposing the idea of going from melb to sydney for some car parts
including a dash, 6 wheels and an exhaust system (CAT to muffler tip)

think it'll all fit inside the VN?
or too tight a squeeze?

dont' have a towball, so can't bring a trailer.

is there a roof rack kit for VN's or can is there a general kit for all holdens?
and how much am i looking at?

If you take out the front passenger seat and rear seat I think it would all fit easy. And you wouldnt have to spend money on something you probly will never use again. Needless to say this would be a problem if you wanted to take anyone with you!

Or another option would be to see if anyone you know has a truck or van or something along those lines. If not....hire one?

Have a look on eBay maybe? There are pros and cons to both roofrack and van ideas! Hiring a van will be expensive and over 100km you get hit with excess km charges (about 30c per km), but you'll probably save money on fuel especially if it's diesel. With a roof rack on and a heavy load, the fuel economy could be shocking on your car. I think the roof rack would fit VN-VS probably.

removing the seats isn't a bad idea, but is it defectable? (highway patrol is pretty common along hume hwy i hear)

i know two guys with vans, but i doubt that it would make the distance

and being 20, i hear they won't rent out vans, plus yeh, it costs too much

i'd rather the trip in the holden

I've heard that having the rear seat out is defectable, don't know about the passenger seat though. Something to do with stopping junk flying from the boot into the back of your head in an accident.

That said, several years ago, I was getting around in an excel that had the rear seat removed and a flat wooden false-floor put in so I could take my telescope around the place...never got done for it.

You got a mate with a station wagon who feels like going for a drive?

If what you've listed is the biggest of it then I reckon it will probably go in ok. Just take some big plastic bags to save your interior getting too dirty if you have to put wheels on the back seats.

well....the list is

mazda dash (probably go over back seat or on passenger seat)
6 tyres all in the boot
various interior trim parts in boot and rear seat

it's the exahust... it's a twin muffler setup, so theres almost zilch chance of getting it in

what about strapped to the top? think it'll handle 110 kmph?

i've carried a bonnet on the roof of my VN once from cambelltown to dandenong (about 100km) doing 100kph with no hassle

All Mazda parts then? I was going to say that if the exhaust's for your car, just get it put on before you start to come back! If not, won't it split into a few sections depending what model it's from?

the only true blue aussie car is a hlden with enough room for a cross country trip

Hey...I never said it wasn't stupid, I'm just saying what I've heard.

As for what's stopping things in wagons...for starters there's normally a back seat, some come standard with cargo barriers, and failing that...you'll end up with a headache
