    Default temperamental instrument lights

I have a 1988 VN exec. 'n my engine warning light keeps flicking on 'n off.. its only just started.. i've had a couple of mates look over the engine to see if there are any obvious problems.. but can't seem to find anything causing it.. also my fuel gauge takes some time to register.. if anyone has had this problem.. or knows what the problem might be.. you'd be a great help.. cheers

ive had the same problem as you recently but not as regularly as you are explaining. my engine light will come on for about 4 seconds every month or so, basically unless it stays on im not going to worry about it too much. but if yours is doing this alot there could be a faulty connection between the sensors and the computer. or a sensor that isnt allways alighning correctly. my mates VP crank angle sensor was playing up and the engine light was flicking on and off alot untill one night the light stayed on and the engine killed itself. the bracket for the sensor had snapped and also the sensor itself was dirty and had been causing a bad reading ( the flashing engine light).

also my fuel gauge and temp gauge will sometimes stick in place. normally ill tap the pannel and they'll come loose but i have heard of this happening in alot of older commodores.

do a fault code reading on your ecu to get the codes, for your engine light to flicker means it's got a intermitent fault, yoru ecu will store this code,

you can get a little ditty on how to do a fault code check here

as for your fuel guage taking some time to register, it's a common fault, a dry solder joint, if you are handy with a soldering iron, you can fix it yourself, otherwise, dont worry about it, like it has been mentioned before, a swift hit on the dash will sort it out
