    Is the bulb holder corroded?
Does the bulb have 2 contacts on the bottom, and are both fillaments ok?

Buying red bulbs/painting them red, doesnt this useally make them light up pink?

Go with the Red leds. Everyone is going that way and you'll be amongst the first to do so.. Plus leds will last forever. You buy the leds in offset sockets etc etc,so they are straight replacement for the standard bulbs. Painting the bulbs doesnt last long before they dull or blacken...PJ
