hey guys. my vn v8's got a flogged box and i've just been given a v6 box with a damaged housing. I'm wondering what the difference between the v6 and the v8 th700 is.
what i'm thinking is use my v8 bell housing and torque converter and stuff and use the back end, all the gears and clutches and stuff, out of the v6 box. does that sounds possible? if it is, it means i wont have to fork out for a new box :-)
thanks,
stu
Well the owners handbook says they both have the same ratios but the refill oil capacity is 4.8 for V6 and 5.0 for V8 so my guess is the V8 has a larger torque converter maybe?
Im not a complete idiot, some parts are still on backorder!
From memory the imput shafts are different on the V8 and V6 boxes. Yes the extra fluid capacity is made up in the TC.

Selling FG G6E Turbo and buying a N/A Supra
my theory was when mine blew if it did it once it'll happen again so when i went hunting for a new 1 i got quoted around 2k from a few place4s for a new 1 or $1500 for a rebuilt with stage 2 shift kit so i got the shift kit and never looked back cos the box feels rock solid now and it shifts ten times better

the input shaft is between the torque converter and the box.

Jolly Wreckers in Dandenong sells them for $130, I found recently rebuilt one only done 8,000 kms since rebuilt (saw a sticker on drivers door frame) so grabbed it and man, it is so clean inside and out!!, now its in my garage. If you're lucky you can find them in good wreckers.

if ya can get a v8 auto for that price i would be buying as many as ya could. ya can get good monye for them even if they need a rebuild.
Thought V8 transmissions were the same as V6 transmission, only that torque converter was different?
If it was an V8 there, I'll be first person to take it out!
Cheers

they are pretty simular the v8 has a different convertor larger also i think th input shaft is slightly different and the bell houseing is a different design
The V8 one will be the chev bolt pattern so they should be the same as the ones on the small blocks in the states. Maybe some import place brings them in for cheap?
i had a bit of a look, there's T700's all over in the states, but the cost to ship them international makes it not really worth it. maybe if you wanted to buy a whole shipping container full it would be worth it. there seems to be a market for them...
so torque converter, input shaft...? that i can deal with. i was more worried about the clutch/bands arrangement being different
from the best of my knowledge the internals like very simluar
would a v8 box fit in a v6 vp?
Why the hell would you bother?

well if your v6 auto trans buggers up and you are able to obtain a v8 one for example
fair question - I'm also wondering this, looking at a transmission change further down the track. Will a V8 transmission fit? What else could I stick in? I'd really like to get a 6 speed manual into mine eventually - can anyone tell me (in a nutshell) what's involved?
I happened to be on the CRS website today and noted that they do a converter "AP 52 Holden V6 T700 auto to Holden V8 & Chev "
So there you go, buy it once and get cheap gearboxes for a looooooooong time
Also seems you can go the other way around "AP 112 V6 Holden to Chev Auto (T350/T400/T700/Powerglide)"

For a 6 speed, it depends on which box you go for. Assuming you go for a T56, there are a few options.
1. Hunt down a genuine bellhousing and clutch setup from a manual vr/vs/vt s1 gts(senator as well I think), get the front half of the tailshaft too. Find a T56, any T56, stuff around installing the mofo.
2. Get a bellhousing from CRS or dellow. Find a T56 box and a suitable clutch, stuff around installing the mofo, and get the front half of your tailshaft modded to suit. Likely to work out slightly cheaper than hunting down genuine parts but will probably involve more work.
3. Get a mal wood kit - expensive but comprehensive. Apparently an absolute pleasure to fit as well, but they will only supply the full kit, not parts of it.
These are a gross oversimplification, but that's the basics anyway. Oh yeah, forgot the pedal box and centre console. Those all need to change of course. And if you're runnning the holden ratio set, it'll need some shorter diff gears, 100km/h in sixth gear with standard VN diff ratio would be under 1300RPM, not so cool.

check the vin tag on a v6 against a v8
for my money they are the same just use your bell housing

if the auto are the same i reckon that is pretty funny. i sold a v8 one for 700 or something. but surely they couldn't be.
don't the auto's have different numbers on the side
Actually, I'm pretty sure that the only differences are the bigger torque convertor on the 8 and the bellhousings. Big problem is that on the V6 box, the bellhousing is part of the case casting. Take a look at the photo at the bottom of this ebay link:
