Alot of people do say when they both start kicking in, it means the diff is about to go.. I have no clue how this works tho..

My freinds vl altho different car does the same thing no lsd.. But spins both.. only a few months later the diff went bang..

it usually means the thrust washers in the diff center are cooked(from to many burnouts)
first they start to bind and lock the side gears to the housing inside the diff casing causing the "lsd" then the thrust washers start to roll up behind the side gears and put excess load on the spider gears. after that you get yourself a BOOM and bits go every where or the spider gears just brake into lost of little peices

EDIT: if it was lsd it would be getting worse as the cone clutches wore out
Stato on the inside, berlina on the out side,5ltr under the bonnet, stockies all round...........that thing has to be a sleeper

Because you cooked the shit out of it? Anyway, most hydrocarbons smell funny, transmission fluid's pretty bad as well i reckon.

    transmission fluid is shit...
I was working on my car and some dripped out onto my face and clothes...
I swear i could smell that fluid in my nose for the next fortnight...
My car only lights up 1 side, generally the drivers side, i prefer it this way really because it means i can have lots of smoke, and retain a fair amount of control.

Or, "arrrgh need lubrication, replace fluid and I may just last another few years!", but given that it's gone twins I'd say you're right. Not sure what mine does, I've only ever spun em up seriously twice just after I got it. The sheer novelty of actually owning a vehicle capable of doing a burnout just went to my head ya know.

from what i understand most of the v8s came out with lsd. but dont quote me on that.
lsd's do the opposit to silgle spiners when they start to go. they only single wheel.
but if you have only gone 2 major burnouts since youve had it(geussing youve had it for a while) the diff should be fine.

TO ALL: only start to worry about your diff if it starts to make noise. or if its single- starts to spin both wheels
if its lsd only worry if its spinning 1 wheel all the time

If its LSD don't even worry if it starts single spinning, it's just worn the clutches and needs to be shimmed up (or a couple of new cones if they're really bad).

Umm . . . if we can step away from the burnouts side of things, what are the benefits of an LSD? There's a little part of me that has to justify everything I do to my car in a way that would sound logical to a normal everyday (non-burnout-doing) person. What PRACTICAL benefits are there that I can't think of??

The reason I ask is that from the backlash I'm getting right now I'm guessing that my diff too is on the way out, and I'm going to replace it with a LSD.

    Cheers
    Sam

    its all about traction
eg if you take off with one wheel in the gravel it will compinsate this and put the power to the other wheel

Well I will quote you, but only to say you're almost right, a lot of V8's came with LSD, but those that didn't got what I have, a "high performance" tagged single spinner with shot peened gears. I know my diff is fine, no noise and only a tiny bit of driveline backlash every now and then.

Yeah what he said, an LSD applies an equal amount of torque to each drive wheel. = better traction = better acceleration = bigger smile.
