My tranny is different to whats in the manual

Is there a way I can find out what it is, I've been having troubles with it as it wont go higher than second andrevs an farts about trying to find another gear. I've looked under and I think it's the selector thingy on the outside of the box has a bit of play in it and not back an forth play, in an out play by atleast 3-4 mm the nut isn't loose but I dont think it should be doing it
it only had a rebuild 3 years ago an had $1800 spent on it by the old owner and has never been thrashed since she's had it.

Dude The Selector Is Supposed To Be Like That Sounds More Like A Problem With The Upshift Solenoid Does It Do It Going Down Gears As Well ?

nope goes into first an second fine and same sec to first easy no probs at all.
I've just ripped the pan off as was gonna change the fluid anyway. where's the Solenoid?
I've been told to look for an check 2 rubber(?) hoses on the back of the tranny but stuffed if I can find them. all there is on it is the kick down cable.
